The FBI is turning to artificial intelligence as a tool to identify threats and fight crime, targeting transnational criminal organizations and drug cartels, Deputy Director Christopher Raia told CBS News on Thursday, three weeks after the bureau released data showing a significant drop in violent crime rates around the country.

Artificial intelligence presents organisations with a curious paradox. The technology can draft documents, analyse information, generate code and respond to customers in a fraction of the time these activities once required. Yet executives investing heavily in these capabilities are still asking a basic question: where is the corresponding economic value?

A working paper estimates that firms pushed toward more remote hiring later adopted generative AI faster—but only on a specific measure: the share of their job postings mentioning GenAI tools or skills. Its explanation is organizational readiness, not a direct benefit from employees working at home.
