Startup Tabby is developing an artificial intelligence-based platform to automate bookkeeping for small businesses and provide real-time profit and loss data. Its founder, Ahad Ali, previously ran an accounting business with a team of 20 people that processed more than 2,000 tax returns annually.
As TechCrunch reports, Ali decided to create the service after becoming disappointed with accounting software, including QuickBooks. In his view, small businesses need not improved accounting software, but a tool that does this work independently.
Real-time financial data
Tabby imports up-to-date account data through the Plaid service and uses AI to create a dashboard with indicators of a company’s financial condition. The platform also processes clients’ documents and displays current profit and loss data.

The company offers a separate version of the product for accounting firms seeking an alternative to QuickBooks. At the same time, Ali aims to work directly with end users as often as possible. According to him, Tabby aims to remove the visible software layer of accounting.
Customers and funding
Over 14 months of operation, 5,500 small businesses began using the platform, while Tabby’s annual recurring revenue stands at about $100,000. The team has seven people: Ali, his technical co-founder, four engineers, and a go-to-market specialist.
The startup is in the process of raising $1 million in pre-seed funding. The team was also preparing to launch Tabby Talk, a natural-language interface for working with the product. The article names QuickBooks, Sequoia-backed startup Rillet, and financial tools from major AI labs among Tabby’s competitors.
