Spoiled chicken, moldy cake found at Fairfield market with lowest score of the week

Ala. (WBRC) – A total of four food establishments scored below 85 during inspections conducted the first week of September, failing to meet satisfactory compliance standards, according to the Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH)

Yasmins Food Mart in Fairfield recorded the lowest score with a 73. Inspectors found a bag of raw chicken and a box of wings and drumettes date-marked Dec. 4, 2025, stored on a shelf in the walk-in cooler. Inspectors noted the chicken had black and gray discoloration, indicating possible spoilage. A box of red velvet cake with visible mold-like growth on the box’s exterior was found, according to JCDH. Inspectors also cited the store for missing soap and paper towels at hand sinks and for not having a food thermometer.

McDonald’s #2537 in Homewood scored a 78. Inspectors found lettuce, tomatoes and cheese out of temperature in a reach-in cooler, along with gnats concentrated around the dry storage area. The restaurant also had no documentation of food safety training for employees and no hot water at a handwashing sink near the grill

El Sol Cantina & Taqueria in Birmingham scored a 79. Inspectors found no backflow prevention device on an exterior hose faucet and no certified food safety manager on-site, which was noted as a continuing violation dating back to February and triggered a 15-day notice of intent to suspend the restaurant’s permit. All prepared foods in refrigerated and frozen storage were also missing required date marks, according to the inspection.

El Pacifico Seafood & Grill in Homewood scored an 82. Inspectors found several unlabeled chemical bottles throughout the restaurant, and only one of the restaurant’s five certified food safety managers had registered with JCDH.

Establishments that score below 85 are required to be reinspected within 60 days.
