Wis. (WMTV) – Despite being vandalized <a href="https://bitcomme.com/why-is-cohr-stock-up-over-5-overnight/” title=”Why Is COHR Stock Up Over 5% Overnight?”>overnight, Second Harvest Food Bank was still focused on its mission of serving those who face hunger insecurity throughout Madison, Sun Prairie and Middleton
Second Harvest wrapped up their fourth “Market Harvest” season at the Wednesday Farmers Market.
Typically, when you go to the farmers market, you look for the best of the best in terms of produce.
Second Harvest is there to take the rest, in order to strengthen their daily offerings and the local agricultural economy.
This year, they’ve bought 64,000 pounds of excess produce from over 30 local vendors to provide fresh food to families in need.
“All of the vendors really appreciate this program because we know the food is going to go directly to people later that day instead of going home and potentially going on the compost pile,” Kate Rowe, a farmers market vendor, said.
Since its inception, Second Harvest has purchased more than 200,000 pounds of produce, pouring $750,000 back into the local economy.
