Powering the Accounting Profession
Like our nation, the history of accounting in New Jersey is a storied tale.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US, we are reminded of those who selflessly served our country. In that same vein, it’s important to recognize the impact that certified public accountants (CPAs) and other finance and accounting professionals have on the economic health of individuals and businesses throughout the Garden State.
From the sole practitioner finding tax savings, to the Big Four executive analyzing manufacturing expansion or the CFO performing financial gap analysis, accounting professionals increasingly rely on relationship building. Being technically savvy in the fundamentals of accounting will always have its place, but client engagement, building rapport with board members, managing retention and communicating effectively have taken on a higher significance amid the changing business landscape.
A Sense of Community
The New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants’ (NJCPA) role in promoting and maintaining high professional and ethical standards of public accountancy in the state, developing and improving accountancy education, and protecting the interests of the public and the members of the Society is unwavering. As the preeminent membership association representing the interests of more than 17,000 Garden State CPAs and accounting professionals, the NJCPA remains steadfast in building an accounting community.
This mission began in 1898 when four New Jersey accountants held their first meeting of the Society of Public Accountants of the State of New Jersey, seeking out the need for a community to support the important role these individuals played in society.
Since then, becoming a resource and place of engagement for our members has been a top priority, as has increasing the pipeline of individuals entering this great profession. Setting up the NJCPA Scholarship Fund in the 1960s has helped support more than 2,000 New Jersey students on their accounting journeys. Thanks to the generous support of NJCPA members and New Jersey accounting firms, the Scholarship Fund has distributed more than $7 million in awards.
Forward Throttle
The future of accounting in New Jersey is bright. With a steady use of artificial intelligence, data analytics and forecasting tools, CPAs, whether in public or private practice, academia or corporate accounting, are taking steps to advance the profession forward.
