This past June, we learned that the hugely popular Sadboy Creamery had plans to move into a larger facility on East Colfax Avenue to both scale up production and ease the pain of ordering and picking up its popular pints. This weekend, those new doors will finally open.
According to an Instagram post the company published today, the new Sadboy Creamery store will open at noon on Saturday, Sept. 19.
“Join us for the grand opening of the new Sadboy storefront on Sadurday, September 19 from noon to 5 p.m.,” it reads. “We’ll be selling ice cream in person, while supplies last. We’ll have an assortment of pints, push pops, and freezer pops. Plus you can check out the new space, say hi to the team, and be a part of Sadboy history.”
It’s a big step for the popular ice cream brand, but not a departure. The company has operated under an order-ahead online model since its 2023 inception, with unique flavors like Cloudy Day Cotton Candy, Cookie Circus, and Cosmic Frownie Batter, dropping every Monday at 10 a.m. for pick-up in a space above City ‘o City on Thursday through Saturday. Its popularity caused a sort of “Hunger Games”-like competition to score a pint, which sell out fast.
“The full space is like three or four times bigger than where we’re currently operating, so we’re pretty confident we’re going to be able to do three- or four-times production very quickly,” co-owner Austin Walker told us in June.
The larger space, greater inventory, and retail presence should help with access and will include a window looking into the production area so all can see the ice cream making in progress. But it won’t be a scoop shop, as the company believes the best expression of its ice cream is served in pints.
That means to a degree, the pint drop “games” will continue. While pints will be available in the shop to purchase, Sadboy will continue making limited-time offerings and online drops for certain items, as the Monday morning rush to order has become part of the brand’s culture. But the goal is to have its core flavors available for pickup an any time
