Ala. (WSFA) – Court filings are shedding some additional light on a Thursday morning bank robbery that ultimately ended with two suspects in custody
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office took James Bernard Matthews, 59, and Albert Devon Dorsey, 53, into custody after a 15-mile chase from Pike Road ended with a crash at the I-85 off-ramp to Union Street, near downtown Montgomery.
Court documents indicate Matthews walked into the Brantley Bank on Vaughn Road in Pike Road and handed a teller a note ordering her to give him “all the money bottom drawer.”
He got away with a little over $3,200 while Dorsey is said to have waited outside in the getaway vehicle.
The teller told investigators she was not able to see a weapon during the robbery but that the suspect made her believe there was something dangerous, possibly a gun, inside his clothing.
Security footage later reviewed as part of the investigation showed the suspect “appeared to have been manipulating a towel located inside his pocket.”
Both men are charged with first-degree robbery, with Dorsey also facing a felony attempt to elude charge, sheriff’s office officials said.
The situation started after deputies responded to the robbery call at 10:20 a.m.
After bank officials called 911, deputies located the suspects’ vehicle using the department’s “extensive technology,” the sheriff’s office said.
A deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over, sparking a pursuit.
The chase ended in a crash on I-85 South near the Union Street exit, where both suspects were taken into custody.
Both suspects suffered minor injuries in the crash. No one else was hurt, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The timeline of these arrests are significant. From the moment the 911 call was dispatched to the suspects being located by deputies took less than seven minutes,” said Assistant Chief Wesley Richerson. “This swift apprehension is an excellent example of what can be accomplished when everyone works together. The calm professionalism of the bank employees, the quick response of our dispatchers and analysts, and the proactive actions of our deputies in the field all played a critical role in the outcome. When every part of the public safety team works together, the results speak for themselves.”
