A larger seed check is only part of the shift: the latest cohort points to growing appetite for ambitious, globally minded startups.
Peak XV Partners has increased the maximum initial investment through its Surge program from $3 million to $5 million per startup. Surge 12 was the first cohort under the new cap, with 18 companies.
Peak XV invested more than $50 million in the cohort’s participants. In total, they raised over $90 million in seed funding. The fund’s average check size has also increased, though the company has not disclosed the exact amount. According to Peak XV, it manages more than $10 billion in assets.
The bar for raising a Series A has risen significantly. We’re also seeing more capital-intensive companies, particularly in deep tech, that need larger rounds at the seed stage.
– Rajan Anandan, Managing Director at Peak XV
According to Rajan Anandan, more Surge startups are pursuing international ambitions. Although more than half of the participants in Surge 12 are based in India, only five are focused on the Indian market. The others are targeting customers in multiple countries.
