BALTIMORE (WBFF) —A Baltimore police officer shot and critically injured a man during an altercation involving a vehicle near Lexington Market on Saturday, BPD Commissioner Richard Worley said during a press conference following the incident.
An ambulance took the 29-year-old man to a local hospital for treatment. The officer was transported to a hospital to receive medical treatment for neck and back injuries, too.

The shooting happened around 9:35 p.m. Police said the officer was issuing a parking citation to a vehicle with suspended and expired tags in the 300 block of N. Eutaw Street and waiting for a tow truck to arrive.
A man showed up, initially denied owning the car, and then acknowledged he owned it, according to authorities.

The officer informed the man that the car was being towed and that he would be allowed to retrieve his belongings.
Police say the man got into the driver’s seat as the officer moved toward the front of the car. Then, the man put the car in drive and began moving back and forth, striking and dragging the officer with the vehicle, despite the officer telling him to stop.

Police said the officer pulled the man from the car and began providing medical aid to him.
During that time, the officer was waiting for a colleague to arrive and position a vehicle in front of the car to prevent it from moving.
“He allowed the individual to get in the car,” Worley said. “The other unit was coming up to block him in, which is routine, we block the front and the back so they can’t move.”
A crowd gathered at the scene, Worley added.
“The numerous officers who got to the scene to assist had to direct all their attention to holding the crowd back from getting to the vehicle, getting to the individual that was lying on the ground,” he said.

Police said the man’s driver’s license had been previously revoked.

Worley briefed Mayor Brandon Scott on the incident and presented him with body camera footage of the encounter.
“From what I saw, the officer did exactly what we ask him to do,'” Worley said.
Neither the officer nor the victim have been identified.
