As customer expectations continue to evolve, TATA Starbucks continues to strengthen the overall customer experience through meaningful engagement, premium coffee experiences and continued innovation. The brand remains focused on creating more personalised and experience-led moments that deepen customer engagement and build long-term relationships with its customers.
In this conversation with Adully,Adrit Mishra, COO, TATA Starbucks, shared insights on the reimagined Starbucks Rewards program and how it reflects evolving customer expectations through greater personalisation, enhanced benefits and lot more.
The expansion of the Starbucks Reserve™ footprint into a critical travel gateway like Aerocity, New Delhi, signals a deepened commitment to premiumization. As you build toward larger retail milestones in India, how are you positioning the high-end Reserve format to balance brand aspiration with mainstream accessibility across diverse consumer demographics?
Over the last decade, we’ve seen a meaningful shift in what consumers expect from a café. Today, particularly among younger consumers, they’re looking for experiences- spaces that inspire discovery, connection, and craftsmanship. This evolution is exactly what Starbucks Reserve was created for.
Reserve stores offer customers the opportunity to experience some of the world’s most exceptional and small lot coffees from around the world through artisanal brewing methods, immersive coffee theatre, and thoughtfully designed spaces that celebrate the craft behind every cup.
Our fifth Reserve store in India, at Aerocity, New Delhi, is a fitting location for this experience. As one of India’s premier global travel gateways, it brings together travellers, professionals, and the local community, making it an ideal setting for a format that celebrates coffees from around the world while also showcasing the craftsmanship of Indian coffee.
At the same time, Starbucks Reserve doesn’t change who we are as a brand. Our coffeehouses continue to welcome customers across a wide range of everyday occasions, while Reserve coffeehouses offer coffee enthusiasts and curious customers the opportunity to explore a deeper, more immersive side of coffee. Together, they enable us to serve diverse customer needs while staying true to our Third Place philosophy, balancing brand aspiration with the warmth, accessibility, and sense of belonging that Starbucks is known for.
With the simultaneous introduction of a newly launched bake-in food menu designed to complement the coffee journey, how are you shifting the overarching marketing narrative to position Starbucks Reserve as a holistic culinary destination rather than just a specialty beverage platform?
Coffee will always remain at the heart of Starbucks, but we are also focused on reimagining the food experience. Our approach to food is centered around three priorities. First, we’re expanding the range of occasions we serve. Whether it’s a freshly baked croissant with a morning coffee, a wholesome lunch, an indulgent evening catch-up, or a late-evening coffee and food pairing, we’re designing menus that make Starbucks relevant across the day, not just for a single occasion.
Second, we’re introducing entirely new food platforms that elevate the café experience. At Starbucks Reserve, customers can enjoy freshly baked croissants, twists, cookies, and a selection of Danish pastries, alongside a range of freshly assembled offerings such as croissant sandwiches, sourdough toasts, and more. These additions complement our coffee journey while broadening the reasons customers choose to visit us.
The third priority is everyday wellness. Increasingly, we’re building menus that offer customers greater choice through high protein, fiber rich, and other balanced food options, enabling them to make everyday choices that fit their lifestyle without compromising taste. Many of our freshly assembled offerings have been purposely designed with meaningful protein content at the core, while continuing to deliver flavour and quality.
Starbucks Reserve is a destination for elevated café experiences built around craftsmanship, discovery, and connection. Whether customers come to savour a signature Reserve coffee, explore curated food pairings, or simply spend time in our thoughtfully designed spaces, every element at Reserve is intended to create a richer, more immersive experience that goes beyond the cup.
The new Reserve menu highlights bold, experiential beverage choices like the Ube Coconut Martini and Ube Coconut Cold Brew, alongside curated handcrafted mixology options. From a product development lens, how do you evaluate which global flavor trends will resonate with the evolving palate of premium Indian coffee consumers?
At Starbucks, innovation always begins with coffee, and we work with two guiding principles. The first is Flavors of Origin, drawing inspiration from the regions in India where coffee is grown, as well as the local ingredients, traditions, and flavour stories that surround them. Rather than simply creating new flavours, we are celebrating India’s rich coffee heritage and culinary culture. This is also reflected in our beverage lineup- for example, the Malabar Coconut Cream Latte is inspired by the coconut-rich flavours of the Malabar Coast, and our Black Palm Jaggery platform celebrates the the rich, earthy sweetness of the Western Ghats. These beverages allow us to tell authentic regional stories while introducing customers to new coffee experiences rooted in India’s own coffee-growing heritage.
The second, is bringing emerging global flavours and innovative beverage trends to India. We’re seeing customers become increasingly curious and adventurous in the flavours they choose to explore. At Starbucks Reserve, this philosophy extends beyond beverages to the overall coffee experience. Guests can enjoy globally inspired offerings such as our Ube range alongside rare small lot coffees from around the world, including India, prepared through handcrafted brewing methods such as pour-over, siphon, and espresso. Supported by the precision of the Black Eagle espresso machine and the expertise of our Coffee Masters, every cup is crafted to deliver an exceptional coffee experience.
Beyond coffee, our handcrafted zero-proof beverages, built on platforms such as martinis and cold brews, are also resonating with customers, particularly during late-evening occasions. As India’s coffee culture continues to mature, we’re witnessing consumers increasingly appreciating coffee experiences and stories that feel authentic and new. Our role is to thoughtfully bring these together, creating experiences that are rooted in coffee while continually inspiring discovery.
TATA Starbucks is restructuring its rewards ecosystem to feature an explicit three-tiered model (Green, Gold, and Reserve). What core consumer behavioural insights prompted this reimagination, and how do you expect the specialized Reserve tier to drive customer lifetime value (LTV)?
At Starbucks, we have always believed that loyalty is about building relationships, not simply rewarding transactions. That is the philosophy behind our reimagined Starbucks Rewards program.
We observed three important shifts in customer behaviour and have adapted our rewards program so consumers are able to find more value in it. First, customers increasingly expect to be recognized every time they visit. Loyalty is no longer just about accumulating points over time; customers want every visit to feel rewarding, whether through faster earning, greater redemption choices or personalized experiences. Second, customers increasingly value flexibility over standardization. A customer visiting us every morning, someone discovering Starbucks over the weekend, or a coffee enthusiast exploring a Starbucks Reserve coffeehouse – all engage with us differently. That means loyalty also needs to become more personalized, offering benefits and experiences that are relevant to different customer journeys. Third, India’s coffee culture has evolved significantly. Customers are becoming more experimental in their coffee choices and engaging more deeply with coffee.
As these relationships deepen, we wanted our Rewards program to evolve from simply rewarding transactions to building stronger, more meaningful relationships. We have made the program easier to earn, more exciting to redeem and more rewarding throughout the customer journey. Members now enjoy greater flexibility, more redemption choices, milestone celebrations, personalized offers and curated coffee experiences so every visit feels more personal.
Over time, we hope to build Starbucks Rewards into one of India’s most loved, experience-led loyalty programs – one that recognizes customers in a more personal way every time they visit Starbucks.
Transitioning to the top Reserve loyalty tier requires accumulating a substantial 5,000+ Stars within a single year. From a marketing and gamification perspective, how do you plan to sustain high engagement levels and prevent member fatigue among users striving to bridge the gap from the 1,000-Star Gold tier? The updated Starbucks Rewards program emphasizes customized benefits, dynamic milestone celebrations, and faster, more accessible redemption thresholds. How is your team optimizing backend consumer data to deliver hyper-personalized offers without diluting the organic, emotional connection that defines the brand?
The Reserve tier is designed as an aspiration built on continuous recognition. One of the biggest shifts we have seen is that customers today do not just value rewards at the end of a journey; they want to feel recognized throughout it. That is why we have designed Starbucks Rewards so that members experience value at every stage through faster earning, milestone celebrations, personalized offers, Double Star Days and curated coffee experiences that make the journey itself rewarding.
Personalization is equally important. Customers increasingly expect brands to understand their preferences without losing authenticity. By responsibly using customer insights, whether it is favourite beverages, visit occasions or evolving preferences, we can recommend products, celebrate milestones and create experiences that feel relevant rather than transactional. For us, technology is simply an enabler. The real objective is to make Starbucks feel more personal every time a customer walks through our doors.
For our most engaged members, the journey culminates in the new Reserve tier. Customers who earn 5,000 Stars in a year receive a personalized black Reserve card featuring their name and year of joining, along with access to exclusive coffee experiences, curated member benefits and surprise-and-delight moments throughout the year. The idea is not simply to recognize loyalty at the end of the journey, but to make our most loyal customers feel genuinely known and valued.
Ultimately, the Reserve tier represents more than our highest level of loyalty. It celebrates our deepest customer relationships through exclusive experiences, greater personalization and access to the very best of Starbucks.
High-value loyalty benefits like “Free Customized Mondays” or exclusive member-only coffee events introduce complex operational variables at the store level. How do product and marketing align with on-ground operations to ensure these programmatic perks translate into seamless, frictionless customer experiences?
At Starbucks, we have always believed that the best customer experiences are simple, even if they are complex behind the scenes. That is why every new Starbucks Rewards benefit is co-created across our product, digital, marketing and store operations teams from the very beginning. Before any new feature reaches our customers, we design and test the entire customer journey, from discovery and redemption to the in-store experience – while ensuring our partners have the training, tools and confidence to deliver it consistently across every coffeehouse.
The reimagined Starbucks Rewards program has also been intentionally designed to make the experience more intuitive. Whether it is easier earning, simpler redemption, personalised offers or member-exclusive benefits such as Free Customized Mondays, our focus is on creating a seamless and rewarding experience for our customers. While the app enables the experience, it is our partners who bring Starbucks Rewards to life. Their ability to recognize customers, recommend their favourite beverages and create genuine moments of connection is what transforms a digital loyalty program into a memorable Starbucks experience.
Ultimately, we do not measure the success of Starbucks Rewards by the number of benefits we offer. Success for us also depends on whether customers feel recognized without having to ask, rewarded without friction and feel more connected to Starbucks every time they visit. That is the standard we have built the reimagined Starbucks Rewards experience around.
