Strong mobile commerce adoption accelerates transaction volumes despite cash-on-delivery maintaining a resilient footprint
CASABLANCA – Digital payments in Morocco are on track for significant expansion, with annual online transactions projected to exceed 13.55 billion Moroccan dirhams ($1.43 billion) across more than 55.4 million operations by the end of 2026.
This trajectory reflects sustained momentum following a strong baseline in 2024, when the national e-commerce sector recorded 38.5 million transactions totaling 11 billion dirhams.
The rapid uptick in digital activity is heavily underpinned by mobile adoption. Smartphones now serve as the primary gateway for Moroccan online consumers, accounting for an estimated 72% of all digital purchases. This widespread device accessibility has lowered entry barriers for everyday transactions, helping drive consistent growth in total order volume.
Despite the pronounced shift toward digital storefronts and mobile interfaces, consumer payment methods continue to exhibit traditional habits.
Cash-on-delivery remains deeply anchored in the market, still representing approximately 60% of total orders across specific retail segments.
The parallel rise of high-volume digital processing alongside entrenched cash settlements highlights an ongoing transitional phase in Morocco’s e-commerce landscape, balancing digital modernization with established consumer payment practices.
