N.Y. (WBNG) — The Oneonta City School District was closed to students on Friday, Oct. 23, and Monday, Oct. 26, following a cybersecurity incident, according to information from the district
Friday is a school closure, while Monday will serve as a superintendent’s conference day, with all staff reporting to their respective buildings to plan and prepare for the anticipated return of students on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
What the district initially believed to be internal technology issues has since been identified as a ransomware attack, according to a letter sent to parents.
The district is continuing to assess the full scope and impact of the incident. It is working with a third-party cybersecurity firm to investigate and determine whether any student records or personal information were compromised.
The district said it is following its established incident response protocols and working closely with appropriate professionals and organizations to address the situation. The district said it will continue to share updates with the school community as verified information becomes available.
Students attending all-day BOCES programs will attend their programs as regularly scheduled on Friday and Monday.
Students attending morning or afternoon BOCES programs will not attend their programs on Friday or Monday.
According to the parent letter, the district’s technology team acted immediately to implement measures designed to limit further unauthorized access and potential damage. The administrative team has also convened to coordinate the district’s response, address immediate needs, and plan for the return of students.
The district said the safety and well-being of students and staff remain its highest priorities, and it is committed to minimizing disruptions to student learning while responding to the incident.
