Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) shares jumped about 4% on Friday as investors weighed the competitive implications of Advanced Micro Devices’ (AMD) acquisition of AI inference startup Taalas, a deal aimed at improving the efficiency of artificial intelligence workloads.
The acquisition gives AMD access to a chip design approach that embeds AI model weights directly into silicon, reducingreliance on external memory and potentially improving speed and energy efficiency. The technology is designed for inference, the process of generating responses from trained AI models.
Despite the move, analysts and industry observers suggest Nvidia remains firmly positioned in the AI accelerator market. Nvidia continues to benefit from its CUDA software platform and dominant presence in data center AI chips, where it is estimated to hold more than 95% market share.
AMD plans to incorporate Taalas technology into its broader AI infrastructure strategy, combining it with Instinct accelerators and EPYC processors within its Helios rack-scale systems. The company is targeting cloud providers seeking more specialized and energy-efficient AI deployments.
While the acquisition could strengthen AMD’s long-term AI offerings, market participants generally view it as an incremental step rather than a near-term threat to Nvidia’s leadership in AI computing.
