NMS Capital enters MGA market with Ascendra Specialty and Moonshot Foundry
Beverly Hills PE firm uses a venture studio’s infrastructure to launch across eight specialty lines from day one
NMS Capital Group, a Beverly Hills-based private equity firm, is entering the managing general agency market with Ascendra Specialty,a new multi-line managing general agency built in partnership with Moonshot Foundry, a San Diego-based insurance venture studio. Ascendra plans to write across eight lines, including workers’ compensation, transportation, cyber, construction, and property, giving the firm immediate exposure to some of the most broker-trafficked specialty segments in the US market.
NMS Capital founder, chairman, and CEO Trevor M. Saliba, said construction and property will be the initial focus, drawing on existing carrier relationships, with proprietary programs also planned for the wholesale channel.
The Moonshot Foundry partnership is central to how Ascendra is getting off the ground. Moonshot, founded in 2025, operates a platform designed to compress MGA launch timelines, typically measured in years, down to weeks by bundling national licensing and carrier appointments across all 50 states, a no-code policy rating and issuance system, and billing and premium financing infrastructure. Through that platform, Ascendra also inherits access to what NMS describes as more than 1,200 retail and wholesale broker relationships.
A crowded entry point
Ascendra’s launch arrives as private equity capital continues to flow into MGA formation at pace. According to Conning, total premium flowing through US managing general agents reached approximately $128 billion in 2025, driven by sustained demand for specialty and hard-to-place coverage and continued investment in technology-enabled distribution. The US MGA market has now posted double-digit premium growth for five consecutive years.
That trajectory has attracted a wave of well-capitalized entrants, including GI Partners, which launched a tech-driven MGA platform in 2025 backed by insurance veterans Brad Emmons and Brian Hanuschak, and Bishop Street Underwriters, which launched an MGA incubator designed to support new specialty operators during the same period.
Distribution reach, underwriting depth still to prove
The venture-studio model gives Ascendra speed and breadth, but it also introduces an unanswered question. The 1,200 broker relationships belong to Moonshot’s platform, not to Ascendra specifically. A broker placing workers’ compensation or cyber business through a new MGA will assess underwriting credibility, carrier quality, and claims capability. None of those can be fast-tracked through licensing infrastructure alone.
NMS Capital’s background is primarily in private equity, venture capital, and structured finance across real estate, technology, and other sectors. While Saliba is separately involved with NFG SA, a European holding company with insurance interests, NMS Capital itself has no prior MGA or specialty underwriting track record. Saliba said core carrier capacity across all eight lines has already been secured through the Moonshot partnership and will expand as the platform grows, though no carrier names have been disclosed.
That does not make the venture uncommercial. Moonshot’s infrastructure covers licensing, policy issuance, billing, collections, and premium financing. Brokers evaluating Ascendra as a placement option will need to wait for evidence of which carriers are backing specific programs and who is doing the underwriting. Capacity providers in the current MGA environment are demanding stronger underwriting data and long-term program sustainability before committing authority. That scrutiny applies to any newly formed platform without a disclosed loss history.
Saliba said Ascendra already has a pipeline of retail broking agencies ready to contract with the platform, and that growth will come through a combination of organic expansion and acquisition, with NMS Capital Group’s balance sheet available to support roll-up activity on the wholesale side. No executive appointments for Ascendra Specialty were disclosed.
