Ohio (WTVG) – A new pop-up produce market is coming to Toledo this fall as part of a pilot program to bring affordable, healthy food to residents at the Swayne Field redevelopment site
At the Swayne Field Pop-Up Produce Market, the community will be able to shop for a variety of fresh produce grown in Ohio and Michigan, including herbs, leafy greens, vegetables and fruits.
The market opens Sept. 4 and 5 and will run every Saturday through Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the corner of Monroe Street and Detroit Avenue.
- Sept. 4 (3–8 p.m.) – Grand Opening, Day 1
- Sept. 5 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Grand Opening, Day 2
- Sept. 10 (noon–5 p.m.) – Swayne Field Art Festival Collaboration & Pop-Up Market
- Sept. 12 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Saturday Community Market
- Sept. 19 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Saturday Community Market
- Sept. 26 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Saturday Community Market
- Oct. 3 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Saturday Community Market
- Oct. 10 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Saturday Community Market
- Oct. 17 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Saturday Community Market
- Oct. 24 (10 a.m.–3 p.m.) – Halloween Harvest & Program Finale
The project is part of a larger effort to expand access to nutritious food, support regional growers, build neighborhood connections and bring activity to the Swayne Field site.
Al Peake & Sons, a Toledo-based food distributor with more than 75 years in business, will run the market’s operations, including sourcing produce, transportation, staffing and food safety.
“The goal is to make fresh food more accessible while creating a welcoming space for residents to gather and shop close to home,” said Philip Peake, president of Al Peake & Sons Food Service.
Rosalyn Clemens, the city’s chief of housing and neighborhood sustainability, said the market will benefit residents living in a food desert.
“The Swayne Field Pop-Up Produce Market will give residents in a food desert greater access to affordable, nutritious food in a welcoming setting close to home,” Clemens said. “This is the revitalization work we want to be doing in our NRSA neighborhoods, ensuring residents have access to the resources they need to be healthy and well.”
