Texas (KTRE) – Voters in Nacogdoches County will decide the Precinct 2 commissioner race in the upcoming November election. Both candidates were invited to discuss their campaigns and plans for the county at a candidate forum held Friday
Sandy McCorvey has served as the Nacogdoches County Precinct 2 commissioner for seven years.
“I would like to remain the county commissioner for another four years,” McCorvey said.
His challenger is Gary Woods, a Republican candidate and retired chief appraiser for the Central Appraisal District.
“This probably is my only shot now because of my age. So I called Sandy and I told him my plan,” Woods said.
Both candidates were asked questions about issues affecting residents of Nacogdoches County. McCorvey said listening to constituents remains a priority in his office and campaign.
“It may not make a difference if you vote today it but it will make a difference for the future for your kids and for others that are coming up. And I emphasize that I work hard on that, but the constituents of precinct two, wants what everybody else wants, affordability and for their vote to matter,” McCorvey said.
Woods said he doesn’t have a concrete plan on what he would pursue if he became Precinct 2 commissioner but wants to try.
“What I think at this moment is not important. It’s if I get elected and I can bring it to the table and it works, then it works. So I can make no promises. But I wish Sandy had spoke for me on this one,” Woods said.
Other topics included the IT security breach that happened on the county’s old website in May and what each of the candidates would do to address IT security.
McCorvey said it’s been a priority for the court this year and explained what the county is doing to improve, such as interviewing multiple cyber security companies to modernize their security.
Woods said he would have to wait until he’s behind the desk to learn the scope.
“At this point in time, I can’t tell you what you should do or shouldn’t do. But I would listen to the people that are in control of it. I would aid any way I could help them look for the problems, solve the problems, and my job would be to fund the problems,” Woods said.
McCorvey said right now, there isn’t much that can be done because the county doesn’t have improvement money in the budget.
“Sometimes as a commission, you got to be to say no… the money is not there, and we are not taking on any new roads right now. I don’t know what the future may hold, but we will blade your road, we’ll take care of those potholes until we can get to the point we can pave your road,” McCorvey said.
Woods agreed.
“I have no earthly idea, I’m not sitting in the commissioner’s chair, I don’t know what he knows. I like the way Sandy explained it,” Woods said.
The deadline to register to vote for the upcoming November election is Oct. 5.
