Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Martin.
Hi Monica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never thought I’d be an entrepreneur. But looking back, I can see God working in my life all along, giving me the skills and abilities entrepreneurs need: the desire to build something for others that doesn’t already exist, the desire to create something that makes other people’s lives easier, and the hunger to leave a legacy for my family and the generations after me.
Abundant Grace Bookkeeping was born from a desire I believe most working mothers share. I was a Project Manager for a corporate company, on maternity leave for the third time. But this time was different — I was ready and determined to find a way to keep working remotely while finally having the flexibility to focus on my children. I wanted the privilege and honor of being the one who raised my three kids.
I asked my company if I could go part-time. The answer was no — I was too valuable to lose on such an important project. So, naturally, since I was apparently so valuable, and I hadn’t had a raise in three years, I asked for one of those too. Surprise, surprise: also no. Turns out I wasn’t that valuable after all.
Looking back, that whole moment felt like God quietly whispering that there was another way — I just needed to trust Him and keep seeking it out.
After a brief and unsuccessful detour into the MLM world, I was scrolling Facebook one day and came across an old high school friend. She was living the life I’d been dreaming of — being home with her kids. I reached out and asked what she did for work. She had her own bookkeeping company.
I was intrigued. The truth is, the only reason I’d never started a business before was fear — fear of tracking finances, fear of setting aside enough for taxes. And here was an opportunity not just to build something that worked around my schedule, but to help other people move past that same fear. She gave me the resources to learn how to do other businesses’ books and how to build my own business.
Once I started, I was hooked. I loved the work. I loved networking with other business owners. I loved the flexibility and time freedom that came with building something of my own.
Now I get to spend my days with my children, without worrying about missed meetings or that dreaded Teams ping, and I get to work in the evenings — giving my clients the peace of mind that their financial records are being handled with meticulous care and professionalism.
This has been a true calling, and I feel so blessed to provide this service to my clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, or even a bumpy one — more like a windy one, full of ups and downs. Starting anything new is terrifying. I wasn’t just switching career fields; I was entering a brand-new one as a first-time business owner. (Hello, Imposter Syndrome!)
The hardest parts, I’d say, have been the learning curve — trying to gain and retain so much knowledge in such a short amount of time — marketing myself in this industry, and trusting in God’s providence.
There were plenty of times I wasn’t sure where my next client would come from. But then, without fail, the seeds I’d planted would come to fruition, and a new client would appear.
If I had to name the single biggest piece of building a successful business, though, it’s mindset. If you don’t believe you can succeed, you won’t.

Abundant Grace Bookkeeping offers a full array of bookkeeping services, including weekly and monthly bookkeeping — transaction categorization, account reconciliation, and financial reporting — bookkeeping clean-ups, Accounts Receivable (invoicing) management, Accounts Payable (bill pay) management, sales tax reporting, and full-service payroll.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is my security in the Lord and the contentment that comes from reflecting on all the blessings He’s given me and my family. I’m happy when I think about the life my husband and I have co-created with the Lord, and the children He’s blessed us with. I’m happy when I look at how far we’ve come in our faith journey, and how we’re able to recognize God’s providence in our lives — even when things seem to be going wrong.
I love going to Mass and spending time with Jesus in Adoration. I love homeschooling my children and watching their growth. I love spending one-on-one time with my husband, still learning from each other as we shape our goals and aspirations for our family.
