Geothermal startup Mazama Energy just closed a $135 million funding round to push the boundaries of clean energy extraction, drilling three miles underground to tap into superhot rock formations. The Khosla Ventures-backed company claims each well can generate 15 megawatts of electricity around the clock – enough to power thousands of homes with zero emissions.
The geothermal energy sector just got a major shot in the arm. Mazama Energy announced it’s raised $135 million to commercialize what could be the next breakthrough in clean electricity generation – superhot rock geothermal systems that drill deeper than anyone’s gone before.
The funding round, led by Khosla Ventures, represents one of the largest investments in enhanced geothermal systems this year. It comes as utilities scramble to find reliable, 24/7 clean energy sources that don’t depend on weather conditions like solar and wind.
Mazama’s approach is deceptively simple but technically complex. Instead of drilling into existing hot springs or steam vents like traditional geothermal, they’re boring three miles straight down into superhot rock formations. At those depths, temperatures exceed 400 degrees Celsius – hot enough to create steam on demand by pumping water down and extracting it back up.
“We’re essentially creating our own geothermal resource anywhere we want,” explains the technology’s potential. Each well can generate 15 megawatts of electricity continuously, compared to 2-5 MW from conventional geothermal installations. That’s enough clean power for roughly 12,000 homes, running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The timing couldn’t be better. Tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are desperately hunting for carbon-free electricity to power their expanding data centers and AI operations. Traditional renewables create intermittency headaches that geothermal could solve.
Khosla Ventures has been betting big on next-generation geothermal for years, previously backing companies like Fervo Energy and Sage Geosystems. The firm’s founder, Vinod Khosla, has repeatedly called enhanced geothermal “the holy grail” of clean energy because of its massive scalability potential.
Mazama isn’t alone in this space. Competitors like Fervo Energy recently signed deals with Google to provide geothermal power to data centers, while Sage Geosystems is developing similar superhot rock projects in Texas. The race is on to prove which drilling approach can scale fastest and cheapest.
The $135 million will fund Mazama’s first commercial-scale demonstration projects, including advanced drilling equipment and reservoir engineering. The company plans to target locations across the western United States where superhot rock formations are closest to the surface, reducing drilling costs and technical complexity.
What makes this particularly interesting is the potential geographic reach. Unlike traditional geothermal that’s limited to volcanic regions, superhot rock exists virtually everywhere if you drill deep enough. That could unlock geothermal development in states that never considered it before, from Texas to Pennsylvania.
The challenge remains economics. Drilling three miles down costs significantly more than conventional geothermal wells, and the extreme temperatures create engineering hurdles for equipment durability. But if Mazama can prove the technology works at scale, the payoff could reshape America‘s energy landscape.
