Kenyans looking to work remotely while living abroad have several visa options to consider, ranging from digital nomad permits to skilled migration programmes that offer pathways to permanent residency.
Digital nomad visas allow professionals to live in another country while earning money from employers or clients based outside their host country. They are particularly suitable for freelancers, consultants, journalists, software developers and digital marketers.
Other countries offer skilled migration programmes that assess applicants based on their age, education, professional experience and language skills.
Here are seven countries with visa programmes Kenyans can explore.
Mauritius Premium Visa
Mauritius offers a premium visa allowing foreigners to stay for up to one year while working remotely for overseas employers or clients. The visa is renewable and free to apply for.
Applicants must demonstrate sufficient <a href="https://bitcomme.com/menlo-microsystems-appoints-john-b-kennedy-as-chief-financial-officer/” title=”Menlo Microsystems Appoints John B. Kennedy as Chief Financial Officer”>financial resources, accommodation arrangements and valid travel and health insurance.
The programme does not allow holders to seek employment in the local labour market.
Namibia Digital Nomad Visa
Namibia offers a six-month Digital Nomad Visa for remote employees, freelancers and self-employed professionals earning income from outside the country.
Applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of US$2,000 (approximately Ksh 259,635). Those travelling with a spouse need an additional US$1,000 (Ksh129,818), while each accompanying child requires US$500 (Ksh64,909).
The visa is non-renewable, and applicants must wait 12 months after expiry before reapplying. The application fee is N$3,300, payable after approval.
Spain International Telework Visa
Spain allows non-EU professionals to live in the country while working remotely for foreign companies or international clients.
Applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of approximately €2,442 (Ksh 355,775) for a single applicant under the 2026 threshold.
They also need proof of professional experience or relevant qualifications, an established working relationship with a foreign employer or client, health insurance and a clean criminal record.
The residence authorisation can be issued for up to three years, subject to eligibility.
Portugal Digital Nomad Visa
Portugal’s D8 visa allows remote employees and freelancers to live in the country while earning from foreign businesses.
Applicants must demonstrate monthly earnings of at least four times the country’s minimum wage. Using the 2026 minimum wage of €920, this translates to approximately €3,680 (Ksh 536,139) monthly.
The residence route can initially provide a two-year permit, renewable for successive three-year periods.
