JPMorgan Chase will commit $10 billion over the next decade to its Security and Resiliency Initiative, which makes it an enthusiastic financier of the country’s strategic economic interests. The bank has already spent half that amount on two defense startups: Castelion, which makes hypersonic missiles, and Hadrian, which makes defense hardware. It has not yet said how much it invested in either.
WHAT HAPPENED
Last October, JPMorgan Chase announced its Security and Resiliency Initiative, through which it will disburse $1.5 trillion in industries considered essential to U.S. economic and national security over the next decade. This is a combination of its own capital and the deals that it will underwrite.
Of that, the bank’s own <a href="https://bitcomme.com/did-lowered-earnings-outlook-just-shift-pepsicos-pep-investment-narrative-2/” title=”Did Lowered Earnings Outlook Just Shift PepsiCo's (PEP) Investment Narrative?”>investment capital will be $10 billion, of which half is already spoken for. In August, defense manufacturer Hadrian raised a $1.37 billion Series D at a $7.87 billion valuation. JPMorgan anchored the round alongside Baillie Gifford and Valor Equity Partners, with Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz also in, so the bank is investing beside established venture firms, not alone.
Days later, hypersonic-missile developer Castelion raised $800 million in equity at a $13 billion valuation, plus $250 million in committed credit. JPMorgan co-led the equity with Andreessen Horowitz and Carlyle.
Hadrian uses AI, robotics and software-driven automation to build factories that produce precision components for aerospace, defense and maritime industries. It aims to address a bottleneck in the U.S. defense industrial base: the difficulty of manufacturing complex parts quickly and at scale.
Castelion is a defense-technology startup founded by former SpaceX executives that develops lower-cost, mass-producible hypersonic weapons. Its flagship system, Blackbeard, is designed for high-speed conventional strikes.

WHY IT MATTERS
The initiative focuses on five strategic sectors: supply chain and advanced manufacturing, defense and aerospace, energy resilience, advanced computing and pharmaceuticals.
If this reads as JP Morgan’s hedge and buy-in into key economic sectors, it is. And now is the time for it. The U.S. and its allies are increasingly concerned about dependence on China for everything from critical minerals and advanced manufacturing components to drug development.
