- The $528 million expansion project in Copiah County will increase the company’s production capacity and expand the range of small power transformers manufactured domestically, while creating over 650 jobs.
Governor Tate Reeves and the Mississippi Development Authority announced Tuesday that Hitachi Energy is investing $528 million to expand its operations in Copiah County.
The governor made the announcement from the G20 energy summit in Houston, Texas, alongside Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and other federal energy leaders.
The announced expansion project is Hitachi Energy’s largest investment to date in the U.S., officials said.
Calling it “a massive win for Mississippi and the United States,” Reeves said the company plans to create 654 jobs in its expanded Mississippi transformer manufacturing factory.
“Hitachi Energy could’ve made its largest investment in America anywhere in the country – but the company chose Mississippi,” the governor said. “Mississippi’s momentum is growing stronger every day, and it is our people who are building the future of American energy infrastructure.”
Reeves added that Mississippi is proud to play a leading role in powering America’s future.
Hitachi Energy was incorporated in June 2021, but its founding dates back over a century from predecessor companies ABB and its parent company, Hitachi Ltd. Hitachi Energy is now a global leader in electrification that manufactures transformers and other equipment to help power homes, businesses and communities.
The company’s current facility in Copiah County produces small power transformers and employs 475 people.
Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO, Hitachi Energy, said demand for electricity is growing rapidly, and the grid must grow with it.
“This investment in Mississippi, our largest ever in the U.S., reflects our long-term commitment to American manufacturing and building the grid infrastructure that will help power America’s growth for decades to come,” Schierenbeck said. “We are pleased to work with the Trump administration and Governor Reeves to support investment in American manufacturing at a pivotal time for U.S. energy security.”
MDA said the expansion project will significantly increase Hitachi Energy’s production capacity and expand the range of small power transformers manufactured domestically, helping meet growing demand across North America while strengthening the domestic supply chain for critical energy infrastructure.
The project includes the purchase of a 45-acre site at the Copiah County Industrial Park in Gallman, the construction of a new facility, new manufacturing equipment and infrastructure improvements. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with transformer production scheduled to start in 2029.
The company is taking advantage of the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive, or MFLEX, program, and MDA is also assisting with site development and infrastructure improvements. Copiah County is assisting with the project, as well.
“Reliable energy infrastructure has become one of the most important factors in economic growth, and that starts with the ability to manufacture the equipment that keeps the grid running,” said Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Bill Cork. “At $528 million, Hitachi Energy’s expansion is a massive addition to the investment taking place in Mississippi and puts Copiah County at the center of an industry that is increasingly critical to economic development.”
