Replacing gas heat with electric equipment can look unaffordable at first glance. However, a German analysis indicates the long-run numbers may favor the switch, including for households that would need financing to make it happen.

In figures cited by Euronews, clean-tech company 1KOMMA5° evaluated two options: a €10,000 ($11,600) gas heating replacement or a €60,000 ($69,678) package with solar panels, battery storage, a heat pump, and an intelligent energy management system.
Using 5.99% financing, a €16,500 ($19,161) government subsidy, and lower energy costs, the electrified package totaled €104,542 ($121,404) over 25 years. Over the same span, the gas option reached €116,993 ($135,863) once higher gas prices were factored in, resulting in potential savings of €12,451 ($14,459).
Jannik Schall, head of product and co-founder of 1KOMMA5°, said, “Homeowners should not be blinded by the pure acquisition costs.”
1KOMMA5° also told Euronews that intelligent energy management could trim monthly electricity bills by up to €42. The setup is meant to decide when solar energy should be used at home, stored, or sold so the household buys less high-cost electricity from the grid.

Upfront cost remains one of the biggest barriers for homeowners considering whether to replace dirty-fuel equipment. A heat pump, solar panels, or battery storage can look expensive on its own, but the math can shift considerably once fuel savings, incentives, and financing are factored in.
Gas prices can rise over time, while electric systems paired with solar can give homeowners more control over how they generate and use energy.
Germany’s market is already moving in that direction. Heat pumps accounted for 48% of new heating systems sold in the country, 21% above 2024.
At the same time, Germany weakened its green heating law and dropped a planned ban on new oil and gas heating systems, changes critics said could slow progress.
Jan Rosenow, professor of energy and climate policy at Oxford University, said the “significant watering down of key provisions… postpones necessary decisions and will ultimately make the transition more expensive and more chaotic.”
