Mistral AI, France’s leading artificial intelligence developer and Europe’s biggest player in the field, has closed a new record funding round to fuel its continued expansion. The capital came from private equity firm Advent, funds managed by BlackRock, and directly from the Luxembourg government, which has become one of the company’s shareholders.
The new round builds on financing secured in September 2025, when Mistral raised €1.7 billion in a round led by Dutch chipmaking equipment giant ASML. That deal valued the company at €11.7 billion — meaning Mistral’s valuation has effectively doubled in just a year.
Betting big on computing power
“This funding round gives us computing capacity comparable to that of leading Chinese AI labs,” Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch told the Financial Times.
Mistral describes itself as the only AI company offering a full technological stack — from the underlying models to computing infrastructure and finished products. Unlike American rivals such as OpenAI, with its ChatGPT assistant, and Anthropic, with its Claude model, the French firm has bet on open models whose code clients can modify and deploy on their own infrastructure.
According to the company, this approach is designed to give users greater control over how they implement AI, freeing them from dependence on the pricing and terms of a single provider.
Still trailing US rivals
Despite its impressive growth, Mistral remains well behind its American competitors. Anthropic’s valuation, for instance, has reached hundreds of billions of dollars this year. Europe’s entire AI sector still accounts for only a small fraction of the US market.
That’s precisely why the European Union, through its InvestAI programme, plans to channel hundreds of billions of euros into the industry and is building a network of so-called AI gigafactories — large-scale computing centres meant to boost AI development across Europe.
Mistral currently operates in 20 countries, with clients including Airbus, ASML and HSBC. According to the company’s CFO, Johan Bergqvist, Mistral is closing in on $1 billion in annual recurring revenue and growing rapidly, particularly in Asia and North America. The company hasn’t ruled out an eventual stock market listing, though it has yet to disclose any concrete plans.
