Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – The Chief Communication Officer with Springfield Public Schools says district data has been breached, according to an FBI investigation
This comes just one day after students returned to school from a week long closure due to a cyberattack.
Originally, officials thought data was just blocked.
In a statement, the CCO said “It is possible that the breached information could include social security numbers for staff, though that is not confirmed.”
The CCO also said it is not common practice for the district to include student social security information in student data files.
Free credit monitoring services will be available to all district personnel, the CCO said, and they will make it available as soon as possible. Staff will be notified about how to sign up for the monitoring once it becomes available.
“Our priority remains supporting those who may be affected and working with our partners to understand the full scope of this incident,” the CCO said. “The district remains in close communication with state and federal law enforcement, legal teams, and cyber forensics experts.”
