EU labour productivity rises 0.9% in Q2 2026

• EU labour productivity rose in Q2 2026: 0.9 per cent per employed person and 0.8 per cent per hour worked year on year, Eurostat said.
• Growth improved from Q1’s 0.4 per cent under both measures, showing firmer output efficiency in most EU economies.
• Slovenia and Denmark led both rankings, with Lithuania ahead per person and Latvia per hour; Romania, Ireland and Italy recorded declines.

Labour productivity in the European Union increased in the second quarter (Q2) of 2026, rising 0.9 per cent based on persons employed and 0.8 per cent based on hours worked compared with the same quarter of 2025.

This was stronger than in Q1 2026, when productivity increased 0.4 per cent year on year (YoY) under both measures

Labour productivity combines gross domestic product (GDP) and employment data to measure real output per employed person or per hour worked.

Most EU countries recorded higher productivity in Q2 2026. Slovenia posted the strongest increase based on persons employed at 4.5 per cent, followed by Denmark at 3.6 per cent and Lithuania at 3.5 per cent.

Declines were recorded only in Ireland at 1.0 per cent, Romania at 0.8 per cent and Italy at 0.4 per cent.

Based on hours worked, Slovenia again led with a 5.8 per cent increase, followed by Denmark at 3.5 per cent and Latvia at 3.4 per cent.

Productivity declined in five EU countries, with Romania falling 1.2 per cent, Czechia 0.8 per cent and Portugal 0.5 per cent, while Ireland remained unchanged.
