Troy University alumnus and former director of TROY’s William H. Carr School of Accountancy Dr. Steve Grice has been appointed interim dean of the Sorrell College of Business.

Grice’s appointment, which is effective July 1, comes after Dean Dr. Judson Edwards was named as the University’s interim Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost.

Edwards said Grice’s commitment to the University and its students make him an excellent choice to lead the Sorrell College of Business as interim dean.

“Dr. Steve Grice and I share an enduring connection to Troy University, not only as longtime colleagues, but also as proud alumni who care deeply about its continued success,” Edwards said. “Dr. Grice has excelled as both a faculty member and administrator, but even more important than his professional accomplishments, Steve is a first-class person with an unwavering commitment to serving our students, faculty, staff, and University. I am grateful for his willingness to pause his retirement to serve as Interim Dean of the Sorrell College of Business, and I know he will provide thoughtful and trusted leadership during this important time of transition.”

Grice said called the opportunity to serve in the role an honor.

“I am excited about the opportunity to serve as Interim Dean for the Sorrell College of Business,” Grice said. “The achievements within the College under Dean Edward’s leadership over last 16 years have been tremendous. I am humbled and honored to be a part of this leadership transition with my alma mater.”

Grice, a Certified Public Accountant, currently serves as a scholar-in-residence for the accounting firm of Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC. In addition to previously serving as the Director of TROY’s Carr School of Accountancy, Grice served as the Botts Professor of Accounting. He has also served as the Director of the Master of Accounting program and a professor of accounting at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Grice has received numerous honors throughout his career including the Alabama Society of CPAs’ Lifetime Member Award (2022), Sun Belt Conference Faculty of the Year and TROY Faculty of the Year by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (2021), the Alabama Society of CPAs’ Outstanding Accounting Educator (2018/2019), UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2011), UAB’s Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year (2010), and UAB’s Loudell Ellis Robertson Teaching Excellence Award (2008). In 2003, Grice was honored as the first recipient of Troy University’s Wallace D. Malone, Jr. Distinguished Faculty Award.

In 2016, Grice was a gubernatorial appointment to serve on the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy and was assigned to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) Education Committee in 2019. In 2020, he served on the AICPA Board of Examiners.

Grice earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from then-Troy State University in 1989, his master’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1994 and his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Alabama in 1997. He began his career as a CPA with Coopers & Lybrand prior to earning a Ph.D.  As a doctoral student, he was the Doctoral Consortium Fellow at the American Accounting Association Doctoral Consortium in Tahoe City, CA, sponsored by the Deloite & Touche.  As a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Grice received the highest honor awarded a doctoral candidate in the College of Commerce and Business Administration at The University of Alabama.
