Online movie tickets can qualify for online-shopping credit-card rewards, but eligibility depends on the card and checkout. In Wise Bread’s Regal app test, both movie tickets and a separate concessions purchase showed an Online Shopping category bonus on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards card, with Online Shopping selected. The concessions qualified even though they were purchased through the app while at the theater.
Eligible new cardholders who select Online Shopping can earn 6% cash back on qualifying purchases during their first year: 3% choice-category rewards plus a 3% first-year bonus. A BofA Rewards™ relationship bonus of up to 75% on the standard 3% rate can boost that to 8.25% cash back. These rates apply within the $2,500 quarterly spending cap shared across choice-category, grocery store, and wholesale club purchases.
That means you can keep Online Shopping selected for qualifying movie purchases and other eligible online spending—including eligible restaurant payments—without switching categories for date night.

Which Movie Payments Qualify for BofA Online Shopping?
Movie tickets and concessions can qualify for BofA Online Shopping when paid through an eligible website or app. Bank of America uses information supplied by the merchant to determine whether a purchase was made online. Paying at an in-person terminal does not qualify for Online Shopping, even when you use your phone. For your own purchase, check the rewards details after the charge posts.
| Payment method | Does it qualify for BofA Online Shopping? |
|---|---|
| Pay through the theater’s website | Can qualify. Complete payment online; eligibility depends on the transaction information the merchant submits and the category exclusions. |
| Pay through the theater’s app | Qualified in our Regal test for both tickets and concessions, including concessions purchased while at the theater. Other app checkouts need to be verified separately. |
| Pay through a third-party movie-ticket website or app | Can qualify. The ticketing service submits the payment; check the rewards record rather than assuming it will match the theater’s own checkout. |
| Pay online, then collect tickets or concessions at the theater | Can qualify. Collecting an already-paid order is different from paying for it at pickup. |
| Order online, then pay at pickup | No. Bank of America excludes purchases ordered online but paid for in person. |
| Insert, swipe, or tap a card at a theater terminal | No. This is an in-person payment, not an online purchase. |
| Tap a phone or digital wallet at a theater terminal | No. Using a phone does not turn an in-person terminal payment into Online Shopping. |
The Regal results come from Wise Bread’s test. Other rows apply Bank of America’s published payment-channel rules.
On October 3, 2026, Wise Bread paid for movie tickets and a separate concessions order through the Regal app using the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card with Online Shopping selected. The tickets cost $39.98, including a $5 booking fee, and concessions cost $36.58. Both purchases received an Online Shopping category bonus.
The concessions were purchased through the app while at the theater. Being at the theater did not prevent that app payment from qualifying as Online Shopping.
Did Our Movie Purchases Qualify?
Both Regal transaction records show the merchant description “MOTION PICTURE THEATERS” and “Online Purchase: Y.” Both rewards records also list a CATEGORY BONUS “for online shopping purchase,” confirming that the tickets and concessions qualified for BofA Online Shopping.
How Our 7.5% First-Year Cash Back Rate Was Calculated
The tested account combined the standard 3% Online Shopping rate, a 50% relationship bonus on that standard rate, and the separate 3% first-year bonus. Its rate components therefore add up to 7.5% cash back:
3% + (3% × 50%) + 3% = 7.5% cash back
| Rewards entry | Rate component | Tickets: $39.98 | Concessions: $36.58 | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rewards Base | 1% | $0.40 | $0.37 | The standard base rewards component. |
| Category Bonus | 2% | $0.80 | $0.74 | Both records specify “for online shopping purchase.” Together with base rewards, this makes the standard 3% rate. |
| Relationship Bonus | 1.5% | $0.60 | $0.56 | The account’s 50% relationship bonus applies to the standard 3% rate. |
| Rewards Bonus | 3% | $1.20 | $1.11 | The separate first-year bonus; the relationship bonus does not increase this component. |
| Total shown | 7.5% nominal rate | $3.00 | $2.78 | $5.78 in pending rewards on $76.56 in purchases. |
Dollar amounts reproduce BofA’s pending rewards displays. The percentage column shows the account’s nominal rate components; it does not exactly reconcile the displayed dollar amounts.
How to Earn Up to 8.25% Cash Back at the Movies With BofA Rewards™
BofA Rewards™ can boost eligible new Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards cardholders’ first-year cash back from 6% to as much as 8.25% on qualifying online movie tickets and concessions. Select Online Shopping as your choice category to earn these rates on eligible purchases.
The first-year offer combines the standard 3% Online Shopping rate with a separate 3% promotional bonus. BofA Rewards™ adds a relationship bonus of 10%–75% to the standard 3% rate, depending on your rewards tier.
How the 75% Relationship Bonus Produces an 8.25% Rate
A 75% relationship bonus adds 2.25% to the standard 3% Online Shopping rate. Add the separate 3% first-year bonus, and the total reaches 8.25% cash back:
3% Online Shopping rate + (3% × 75% relationship bonus) + 3% first-year bonus = 8.25%
The relationship bonus does not apply to the additional 3% first-year bonus. Wise Bread’s tested account had a 50% relationship bonus and a 7.5% first-year rate; the 8.25% maximum requires a 75% relationship bonus.
BofA Rewards™ Rates by Tier: First Year vs. Ongoing
BofA Rewards™ membership requires an eligible Bank of America checking account and enrollment. Higher tiers depend on qualifying combined average balances in eligible deposit and investment accounts.
You do not need the highest tier to benefit. The Member tier’s 10% relationship bonus raises the qualifying first-year rate to 6.3% and the ongoing rate to 3.3%.
| BofA Rewards™ tier (relationship bonus) | Standard minimum qualifying average balance | Eligible first-year rate | Ongoing rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| No relationship bonus | Not applicable | 6.00% | 3.00% |
| Member (10%) | No minimum balance | 6.30% | 3.30% |
| Preferred Plus (25%) | $30,000 | 6.75% | 3.75% |
| Preferred Honors (50%) | $100,000 | 7.50% | 4.50% |
| Premier (75%) | $1,000,000 | 8.25% | 5.25% |
Rates apply to qualifying Online Shopping purchases, subject to the $2,500 quarterly spending cap shared across choice-category, grocery store, and wholesale club purchases. First-year rates require an eligible new-cardholder offer. Balance requirements refer to qualifying combined average balances. Some customers have customized eligibility or extended credit-card benefits; check your account for the relationship bonus that applies.
The relationship bonus can keep adding value after the first year. Once the separate 3% promotional bonus ends, qualifying purchases earn 3% without a relationship bonus—or 3.3%–5.25% with BofA Rewards™. You can keep Online Shopping selected for eligible movie purchases and other qualifying online spending.
How to Decide if the Extra Cash Back is Worth It
When Online Booking Fees Erase the Rewards Advantage
Buying movie tickets online can be convenient, but booking fees can outweigh the extra cash back compared with paying at the theater. Compare the total cost after fees and rewards—not just the cash-back rate.
In our Regal test, two tickets cost $39.98, including a $5 booking fee. Bank of America displayed $3.00 in pending cash back, bringing the effective cost to $36.98.
For comparison, assume the same tickets were available at the theater for $34.98 without the booking fee. This is an illustrative alternative, not a verified box-office price or a second tested purchase. With Online Shopping still selected, the same card’s non-category rate would be 1.5%, including the account’s 50% relationship bonus: 1% + (1% × 50%) = 1.5%.
| Payment option | Total charged | Cash back | Effective cost after rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regal app: tested payment | $39.98 | $3.00 pending, as displayed | $36.98 |
| Theater terminal: hypothetical no-fee alternative, same card | $34.98 | Approximately $0.52 at 1.5% | Approximately $34.46 |
The app payment and pending rewards are documented in our test. The theater-terminal comparison assumes the same underlying ticket price without a booking fee; its estimated rewards are rounded to the nearest cent.
Under those assumptions, paying through the app would cost about $2.52 more after rewards. The app payment would earn about $2.48 more cash back, but that would not cover the $5 additional fee.
Evaluate concessions separately: our Regal app concessions purchase qualified for Online Shopping, and its receipt showed no separate booking fee. This shows another way to earn choice-category rewards, although the receipt does not establish whether app and counter prices were identical.
When You Hit Your Spending Cap
The 3% cash back on BofA’s choice category is subject to the $2,500 shared quarterly spend cap. Once you have reached the spending limit, any further purchase in that category will only earn 1% to 1.75% cash back.
When the First-Year Promotion Ends
The separate 3% first-year bonus ends after the promotional period, but your BofA Rewards™ relationship bonus can continue. Qualifying Online Shopping purchases then earn 3%–5.25% cash back, depending on your applicable relationship bonus, within the shared $2,500 quarterly spending cap.
Which Cards Earn Bonus Cash Back on Online Movie Tickets and Concessions?
Paying online does not automatically qualify a purchase for an online-shopping bonus. BofA’s Online Shopping category rewarded our tested Regal app purchases, while American Express Blue Cash Everyday’s U.S. Online Retail category excludes entertainment. Similar-sounding category names can have different eligibility rules.
This comparison covers ordinary movie-ticket and theater purchases. It excludes one-time cash welcome bonuses, targeted merchant offers, and separate ticketing-portal promotions.
| Card | Cash back on movies | Key conditions and spending limits |
|---|---|---|
| Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards | 6%–8.25% in the eligible first year; 3%–5.25% afterward on qualifying Online Shopping purchases. | Select Online Shopping and pay through an eligible online checkout. Higher rates require an applicable relationship bonus. $2,500 quarterly spending cap, shared with grocery store and wholesale club purchases. Non-category movie purchases and spending above that limit generally earn 1%–1.75%. |
| U.S. Bank Cash+ | 5% on qualifying movie-theater purchases, including eligible concessions. | Activate Movie Theaters as one of your two 5% categories each quarter. $2,000 quarterly spending cap across both selected 5% categories; then 1%. Eligible purchases do not need to be paid online. |
| Capital One Savor | 3% on qualifying entertainment purchases, including movie theaters. | Unlimited qualifying 3% rewards, without quarterly category activation. Online or in-person purchases must receive an eligible merchant classification. |
| American Express Blue Cash Everyday | Generally 1%, not its 3% online-retail rate, on movie-theater purchases. | Amex’s U.S. Online Retail category excludes entertainment. Paying online does not by itself make movie tickets eligible for 3%. The general 1% rate has no category spending cap. Terms apply. |
Competitor rates are based on issuer terms.
BofA’s eligible first-year rate exceeds Cash+’s 5%. After the promotion, Cash+ beats BofA’s 3%–4.5% rates, but not its highest 5.25% ongoing rate. Each comparison assumes qualifying purchases and available category spending capacity.
BofA’s distinction is that qualifying movie payments can share the Online Shopping setting with other eligible online spending; Cash+ uses a Movie Theaters category, while Savor offers an uncapped entertainment rate.
Frequently Asked Questions About BofA Movie Night Rewards
Can I Earn Movie-Theater Rewards and Credit-Card Cash Back on the Same Purchase?
Yes, when the purchase qualifies for both programs.Regal’s loyalty program awards points on eligible ticket and concessions purchases, separately from credit-card rewards. Sign in to your Regal loyalty account before buying online so the purchase is associated with your membership.
Pay with your Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card with Online Shopping selected. An eligible purchase can earn the card’s Online Shopping rewards alongside eligible theater points, subject to each program’s rules.
Can BankAmeriDeals Add Extra Cash Back on Movie Night?
Potentially, when a qualifying offer is available in your account. Bank of America’s cash back deals can stack with the rewards your eligible credit card already earns. Before purchasing tickets, check your available deals for a matching theater or ticketing offer.
Follow the offer’s instructions, including activation or a required shopping link, eligible payment card, purchase requirements, and expiration date. Movie-related offers are not guaranteed to be available, and an offer may distinguish between online and in-person purchases.
Can I Buy Movie Tickets Online Without Paying a Booking Fee?
Sometimes—check whether your theater membership includes a fee waiver. For example, active Cinemark Movie Club members pay no online ticketing fees when booking through Cinemark’s own website or app. The waiver does not necessarily extend to third-party ticket sellers.
Movie Club is a paid membership, so include its cost when evaluating the savings. Check benefits you already have before paying a booking fee; a new membership should make sense for your moviegoing habits, not just one transaction.
Can I Keep Online Shopping Selected for a Movie Night at Home?
Yes—eligible streaming services are included in BofA’s Online Shopping category. You can keep that category selected for qualifying streaming charges rather than switching settings when date night moves from the theater to the couch. Check eligibility for the specific service and payment method; do not assume every entertainment charge qualifies.
See our BofA streaming rewards guide for how to combine credit-card cash back with a separate debit-card subscription credit.
Bottom Line: Movie Tickets and Concessions Can Share Your Online Shopping Category
Wise Bread’s Regal test using the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card found that both movie tickets and concessions paid through the app qualified for BofA Online Shopping—including concessions purchased while at the theater. That is an opportunity to earn choice-category rewards without switching away from Online Shopping.
Eligible new Customized Cash Rewards cardholders can earn 6% in the first year, or up to 8.25% with a 75% relationship bonus. Ongoing rates are 3%–5.25%. These rates apply within the $2,500 quarterly spending cap shared across choice-category, grocery store, and wholesale club purchases.
The Customized Cash Rewards card is worth considering for movie purchases you already pay for online and app-paid concessions without added fees, while retaining the same category for other eligible online purchases. Choose the option that costs less after fees and cash back.
