Wis. (WBAY) — The FBI confirmed it is looking into a cyber incident that reports say could have leaked millions of images of driver’s licenses and other IDs, which may be for sale on the dark web
The company involved, IDScan.net, specializes in identity verification and fraud prevention. It sells technology to companies that need to check a customer’s ID, such as verifying age to buy alcohol or rent a car.
IDScan.net posted a data security notification on its website. It says that around Sept. 1, an unauthorized third party may have accessed or copied customer information stored within their accounts.
The information may include full names and driver’s license or other government-issued identification numbers.
James Lee, president of the Identity Theft Resource Center, said the number of people affected is not yet known.
“We’ve been told that there’s in excess of 150 million images of driver’s license, of state IDs, of medical dispensary cards,” Lee said.
Lee said what makes the breach risky is that the exposed material includes full images of driver’s licenses.
Lee said it is not known which states are involved. Neither IDScan.net nor any companies that use its technology have published specifics about which customers were exposed.
Officials recommend protecting personal information and freezing credit rather than waiting for a notice.
