(WABI) – A Freeport-based hospitality group that owns and operates several chain hotels in New England and beyond is facing a potential class-action lawsuit over a data breach.
According to their website, Maine Course Management Company owns 28 hotels, 14 in Maine, with locations ranging from South Portland to Bangor.
The company reported the hack to the Maine Attorney General’s Office saying names, social security numbers, and state ID numbers could have been compromised.
The breach 7,194 people, including 3,954 Maine residents.
Records show the hack happened last October 31 and was discovered the next day, but notices were only mailed to victims on July 31.
The Attorney General’s office says data breach notices should be sent without delay—with an exception for cases when a criminal investigation is ongoing and the notice could compromise the investigation. Even in those cases, they say the notice should be made within seven days of the okay from law enforcement.
Earlier this week, a lawsuit seeking class-action certification was filed in federal court in Portland claiming the company failed to implement reasonable safeguards for their information systems, and unreasonably delayed notifying victims.
