OROVILLE, Ca. —Butte County residents showed up in droves on Wednesday, August 5 to let their voices be heard in opposition to any potential artificial intelligence data centers in the future.
The corridors in Butte County Board of Supervisors Chambers was standing room only to hear Paula Daneluk’s general presentation. Daneluk emphasized during her presentation to the Butte County Water Commission that there was no application or developmental proposal for an AI data center.
“There is not application that has been received in our department” Daneluk told the commission.
“We have not had conversations with anybody even asking about this land use in our department”.
Over fifty residents requested to provide public comment on the matter. Many residents said an AI data center could strain the area’s water supply and urged officials to impose strict regulations and require environmental reviews for any proposal.
“Data centers are not general tech infrastructure, they are industrial resource vacuums” one resident said.
“While the tech industry profits from the clouds it leaves local communities in real physical fall out”.
Many residents arrived to the meeting with signs that read “No Data Centers!” to show their disdain for the idea. The presentation was listed as a discussion item on the agenda with some council members advocating to put it on the backburner to discuss for another meeting in the future.
