Bookkeeper arrested for stealing over $300,000 from Coos County company, police say (Lexi Ryan/SBG)
COOS COUNTY, Ore. —A bookkeeper with a Coos County business located in the 57000 block of Fairview Road near Coquille has been arrested after police say she stole over $300,000 of company money.
A deputy with the Coos County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to the location on Tuesday, Aug. 25 to take a report of embezzlement.
An investigation led to the discovery that the company’s former bookkeeper, 48-year-old Maria R. Padgett, had allegedly stolen more than $300,000 from the company between December 2023 and August 2026
Officials said Padgett was arrested on 16 counts of aggravated theft in the first degree. She was transported to the Coos County Jail, where she was booked and is now being held.
