A Bank in Fairfax County, Va. (7News)
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) —Fairfax County Police Departmentofficials are looking for a suspect they believe took $2,400 in a ‘bank jugging’ incident.
On Oct. 23, just before 10:30 a.m., the victim withdrew money from a bank in the 4400 block of Backlick Road in Annandale. Then, the victim drove down the street to a gas station and got out of the car.
Video surveillance shared with 7News shows another man parked behind the victim. In the video, that man gets out of the car, opens the victim’s driver’s side door, takes the money, gets back into his own car, and drives off.
Police said the suspect started following the victim right after he got the money out of the bank up the street.
“Were they just sitting at the ATM staring him down, waiting for him to take the money out? That’s just a little bit creepy,” said one woman who lives in the area. “You should be able to go to the ATM and take out some money and just be able to leave it for a few minutes or seconds.”
Investigators call this crime ‘bank jugging.’ 7News has extensively covered these crimes in the past. In 2025, seven people were arrested in connection with a spree that targeted dozens of people across Maryland, stealing more than $150,000.
Fairfax County Police are reminding people of the following tips to stay safe:
- Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to anyone who may be observing your activities outside a bank or <a href="https://bitcomme.com/three-years-of-transforming-nigerias-financial-reporting-landscape/” title=”Three Years of Transforming Nigeria’s Financial Reporting Landscape “>financial institution.
- Conceal cash and bank-related items: Do not leave cash unattended in your vehicle. If you do, ensure the money is locked in the glove compartment.
- Vary your routine: Criminals often look for patterns, so it is advisable to change your habits regarding banking and cash withdrawals.
- Secure your vehicle: Ensure that your vehicle is locked, windows are closed, and valuables are not visible, reducing the likelihood of becoming a target.
- Report suspicious activity: If you notice someone acting suspiciously or believe you are being followed, report it to the police as soon as possible.
Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call the Franconia District Station at 703-922-0894 and ask to speak with a detective.
