As cyberattacks surge, 56% of pros report severe understaffing

According to the State of Cybersecurity 2026 report, prepared by ISACA, 38% of European IT and cybersecurity professionals say their organization has suffered more attacks than a year ago.

At the same time, 56% indicate that their teams are understaffed, and 55% consider the available funding inadequate.

Concern also extends to the immediate future: 54% of respondents believe it is likely their company will suffer a cyberattack within the next twelve months.

Social engineering becomes the most frequent threat

The study identifies cybercriminals and hackers as responsible for 39% of the incidents recorded by the analyzed organizations.

However, the main mode of attack is social engineering, mentioned by 46% of professionals.

This technique seeks to manipulate users to obtain confidential information, gain credentials, or provoke actions that compromise business security.

Artificial intelligence is expanding the possibilities of these attacksby facilitating the crafting of fraudulent messages and automating certain operations.

The report notes that social engineering already surpasses conventional methods of computer intrusion among the most frequent threats.

72% of professionals experience more stress than five years ago

Work pressure is another problem detected by ISACA. 72% of respondents acknowledge that their position is currently more stressful than five years ago.

The increasing complexity of threats appears as the main reason, indicated by the same percentage. It is followed by unrealistic expectations and task overload, with 57%, and training or skill deficiencies, mentioned by 35%.

Despite this situation, 21% of organizations have not implemented measures to prevent professional burnout.

Among the companies that do act, 55% offer flexible hours and 46% encourage breaks and the enjoyment of vacations.

Chris Dimitriadis, ISACA’s Global Strategy Director, is blunt: “The growing gap between the increase in threats and the lack of resources allocated to cybersecurity is taking a toll on the people responsible for managing them.“

The executive considers it necessary to strengthen preventive investment, especially in hiring, training, and protection tools, rather than focusing budgets solely on responding to incidents.

37% of companies use artificial intelligence to detect threats

In 2026, artificial intelligence is gaining more prominence in security departments. In fact, 37% of organizations use it to automate threat detection and incident response, eight percentage points more than in 2025.

It is also used to automate routine security tasks in 35% of companies and to protect endpoint devices in 29%.

Specialists are increasingly participating in these technological decisions. 54% say they have been involved in the development or implementation of AI solutions, and 60% have collaborated in the creation of internal policies to regulate its use.

71% of organizations have not conducted drills for AI incidents

The incorporation of artificial intelligence is advancing more rapidly than the mechanisms intended to manage its risks.

The report reveals that 71% of organizations have not yet conducted exercises to test how they would respond to an incident related to this technology.

Additionally, only 3% have sufficiently developed specific procedures, while 30% have not even begun to prepare a response strategy.

Among the scenarios that should be considered are sensitive information leaks, fraud through artificial intelligence, and the misuse of generative tools by employees.
