Apollo Global Management, one of the world’s largest private equity firms with $938 billion in assets under management, has confirmed a data breach involving personal information stolen from its cloud systems.
In a filing with California’s attorney general, the company said hackers gained access to its cloud environment through a social engineering attack between July 6 and July 10. The stolen information includes names, birth dates, contact details and Social Security numbers. Apollo has not disclosed whether the data belongs to its employees or individuals associated with companies it owns.
The breach comes weeks after Google security researchers warned of a broader extortion campaign targeting private equity and financial firms. Apollo had previously been identified as one of the potential targets, alongside Blackstone, Bridgewater and Bain Capital, although it was not clear at the time whether any of the companies had been compromised.
According to Google, the attackers use social engineering tactics, often posing as IT helpdesk employees to trick victims into entering their credentials on fake login pages. The stolen data is then used as leverage to demand ransom payments, with some reported attacks resulting in payments of up to $750,000.
