The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has announced three finalists in its national search for the next chief communication and marketing officer.
The candidates will participate in campus interviews July 6-10 with university communicators, deans and administrators. Finalists, listed by interview date, are:
- July 6 — Chuck Steenburgh, most recently assistant vice president of integrated marketing and communications, St. Mary’s College of Maryland;
- July 7 — Jeff Sheldon, interim executive director for university communications and marketing, University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and associate executive director of marketing and business relations, Nebraska Alumni Association; and
- July 10 — Scott Silversten, associate vice president of communications and marketing, Florida Atlantic University.
The chief communication and marketing officer provides strategic leadership for the university’s communication and marketing efforts, advancing institutional priorities through integrated marketing, strategic communications, media relations, executive communications, digital strategy, brand management and issues management. The position leads University Communication and Marketing and works collaboratively with communicators and campus partners to strengthen the university’s reputation and visibility.
Chuck Steenburgh | July 6
Steenburgh most recently served as assistant vice president of integrated marketing and communications at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where his tenure ended in February. He oversaw marketing, communications, publications, social media, web services, and photo and video production, providing strategic communications leadership to support enrollment, fundraising, branding, and institutional priorities.
Before joining St. Mary’s in 2022, Steenburgh spent 18 years at American National University, where he served as vice president of marketing and communications. Earlier in his career, he held communications and government relations leadership roles with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and Virginia Military Institute.
Steenburgh earned a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Military Institute and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma.

Jeff Sheldon | July 7
Sheldon has served as interim executive director for university communications and marketing at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln since January 2026, providing strategic leadership for University Communication and Marketing. He oversees integrated marketing, media relations, crisis communications and executive communications efforts while serving on the chancellor’s Executive Leadership Team.
Sheldon also serves as associate executive director for marketing and business relations and senior director of marketing and communications for the Nebraska Alumni Association. He previously served as communications director for Nebraska Appleseed.
Sheldon earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He also holds an executive certificate in nonprofit leadership from UNL’s College of Business.
Scott Silversten | July 10
Silversten serves as associate vice president of communications and marketing at Florida Atlantic University, where he leads integrated marketing, media relations, creative services, website development, trademark licensing and video production. He has guided university branding initiatives, strategic communications efforts and marketing campaigns supporting institutional goals.
Before joining Florida Atlantic in 2012, Silversten served as director of communications and marketing at SUNY Cobleskill and assistant director of college relations and communications at Manhattan College. Earlier in his career, he held communications positions with Golf Digest Publications, Nature Publishing and ESPN SportsTicker.
Silversten earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in publishing from New York University.
