Mercury, a FinTech company providing banking services to more than 300,000 business customers, has launched Mercury Books, a double-entry accounting product built directly into its banking platform.
The new tool uses artificial intelligence to categorise and reconcile banking, card, invoicing and bill pay activity as it happens, giving founders a live view of their business finances without imports, exports or manual data entry. Mercury Books runs full double-entry accounting and supports both accrual and cash basis reporting, with the company positioning it as an accounting system designed to meet the needs of bookkeepers and accountants rather than simply logging transactions for later interpretation.
Customers can also connect external platforms including Stripe, Gusto and PayPal, alongside thousands of other banks and credit cards, allowing financial activity to be categorised and reconciled within a single system.
The product integrates with Command, Mercury’s existing AI agent, allowing customers to ask questions about their finances or instruct it to carry out tasks such as recategorising transactions in bulk, drafting journal entries and amending the chart of accounts through natural language commands. Every action requires customer confirmation before it takes effect.
Accountants and bookkeepers can be added as advisors at no extra cost, while each categorised transaction is linked back to its original activity so figures can be verified against the underlying transaction data.
Mercury describes itself as a banking provider built to help customers hold, move and understand their money, with cards, invoicing, bill pay, spend management and its financial AI agent housed within a single platform. The company says this integrated approach enables customers to access financial information without having to piece it together across multiple systems.
Mercury Books will be available to all Mercury business customers free of charge until the end of 2026, after which it will cost $35 a month. Some customers may also be eligible for a further one-month fee waiver depending on when they subscribe. Bookkeeping services are not included in the subscription and remain subject to separate arrangements with individual bookkeepers.
Mercury co-founder and CEO Immad Akhund said, “In my last business, I received a spreadsheet for my books 15 days after the month closed. It used to drive me crazy trying to figure out why some cost was suddenly up. Mercury Books helps you categorise in real time and understand how each cost line item tracks to each transaction in your bank and card account.”
