WSO2, an enterprise digital infrastructure firm that generates more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue, has opened its first Africa-based office in Johannesburg, South Africa. The facility serves as a regional hub for the software provider, which maintains operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Spain, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates since its founding in 2005. The physical expansion addresses rising demand from African governments, telecommunications operators, banks and retailers looking to update legacy systems and prepare their infrastructure for artificial intelligence applications.
The company reports that its African operations have recorded roughly 30 percent year-on-year revenue growth over the past two years. During this period, the regional customer base expanded from 40 to more than 65 organizations across 25 countries, adding recent client deployments in Benin, Egypt and Côte d’Ivoire.
“Africa isn’t a peripheral market for WSO2. It’s one of the fastest-growing parts of our business, and this office launch reflects our long-term commitment to the region,” said Dinal Gooneratne, WSO2’s Vice President and General Manager for Africa.
Gooneratne stated that the permanent presence in Johannesburg allows the firm to engage with clients shifting from testing phases to active execution of modernization and artificial intelligence projects. WSO2 provides an open-source platform that enables clients to deploy services across cloud, on-premises and hybrid environments while maintaining data control. According to the company, this infrastructure design aligns with emerging regulatory requirements, such as the digital sovereignty standards outlined in Kenya’s draft artificial intelligence policy.
Government contracts have driven a large portion of this regional growth. WSO2 supplies the technology that powers digital services for multiple public sector entities, including the Government of Malawi, the Kenya Revenue Authority, the Uganda Revenue Authority and Lesotho Revenue Services. In addition, the firm supports operations for Uganda’s National Information Technology Authority and Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. To support further adoption, the provider intends to target additional markets across East, West and North Africa taking a partnership-led approach.
To support its regional expansion, the company will host WSO2Con Africa in Nairobi from September 22 to 24. The technology conference, which marks the first time the global event has taken place on the continent, will gather business leaders to review digital sovereignty, system integration and the deployment of agentic artificial intelligence. The agenda includes customer case studies and practical workshops focused on the governance and scaling of software agents.
