Conn. (WFSB) – State officials say a data breach involving the Connecticut Medicaid program’s provider portal exposed payment and claims information tied to roughly 41,000 HUSKY Health members
The Connecticut Department of Social Services said Gainwell Technologies, which serves as the state’s fiscal agent for the Medicaid program, first detected the breach on June 25, 2026, after an outside party gained entry to a provider’s reimbursement account.
According to DSS, the intrusion did not reach electronic health records, Social Security numbers or financial account details. Depending on the individual, exposed data could have included a member’s name, an ID number tied to their provider payment or Medicaid claim, service dates, billing details, payment amounts, and information tied to any outside health insurance policy, including group and policy numbers.
Officials said evidence points to a financial motive behind the breach rather than an effort to obtain patient information. Gainwell has since tightened security measures on the portal.
Commissioner Andrea Barton Reeves addressed the incident in a statement.
“Patient safety and privacy are paramount,” Barton Reeves said. “We take this incident seriously and are grateful that Gainwell’s swift action contained the breach. We continue to work closely with our contractor, <a href="https://bitcomme.com/embry-riddle-delivers-inaugural-cybersecurity-course-in-bahrain/” title=”Embry-Riddle Delivers Inaugural Cybersecurity Course in Bahrain”>cybersecurity experts, and law enforcement to investigate fully and strengthen our security protections.”
The state agency and Gainwell are continuing to investigate alongside outside cybersecurity specialists and law enforcement at the state and federal level. Officials said more safeguards have been added to strengthen the portal going forward.
Mailed notices to those affected went out starting Aug. 21, 2026. Those letters include information on free credit monitoring, identity protection and fraud assistance services. DSS says anyone who suspects they were affected can call 1-866-200-0986 for details.
