A wave of cyberattacks targeting U.S. public water systems is heightening concerns about security gaps at utilities, with government officials warning that hackers are exploiting a particularly vulnerable industrial computer, according to security experts.

What started as a cyber attack on water systems in Minnesota has appeared to spread to a number of other states, as more and more such systems report being hacked in an effort that has been linked to Iran.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The FBI is tracking a sharp rise in malicious cyberattacks on water utilitiesacross seven states in under two weeks, with some attacks causing operational disruptions, including loss of water pressure and flooding.

At least two municipal water systems in New Jersey were reportedly targeted in a cyberattack that affected utilities across at least a dozen states.

The FBI has warned that water utilities are actively being targeted and need to disconnect their systems from the internet, or “airgap” them, because that’s how hackers are getting in. (PHOTO: KATV)

Many were surprised in late July when the US state of Minnesota reported that more than 30 of its state water systems had faced a “co-ordinated cyber-attack”.

Malicious cyber activity affected technology at water systems in at least seven states in late July, including Minnesota and Michigan, forcing some utilities to switch to manual operations as state and federal authorities dig into who is behind the attack, CBS News has learned.
