Hackers have seized on a data breach at digital financial firm Revolut to try and harvest more account information from customers

The Revolut data exposure may be part of a much broader cyber incident involving compromised Italian government infrastructure.

Fintech company Revolut is believed to have identified a group of about 680 customers that have been impacted by a recent data breach.

Revolut, Europe’s largest fintech company has disclosed a significant data breach after fraudsters posing as government officials convinced the financial technology company to hand over highly sensitive customer information, including identity documents, account details and transaction histories.

Speaking to Infosecurity on September 14, a Revolut spokesperson said an unauthorized third party submitted “fraudulent requests for information” using a “legitimate government agency domain email”.

Someone impersonating a government agency, using an email address on that agency’s domain, obtained sensitive customer records from Revolut. The bank confirmed the incident on Saturday, September 12.

Revolut gave sensitive customer information to criminals who requested it from what appeared to be a government email address, and did so because the address was real.
