Caterpillar Inc. announced early Wednesday that it plans to invest approximately $1 billion in a new Sanford manufacturing facility expected to create more than 1,950 jobs, revealing the company behind the previously code-named Project Paragon.

SANFORD, N.C. (WTVD) –Caterpillar Inc. plans to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing capacity for products that support its growing Cat Compact business, helping customers gain faster access to the machinery they need to tackle tough jobsite challenges and build homes, infrastructure and communities.

Construction equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. plans to invest $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing in Sanford, the company said Wednesday. The decision comes less than two weeks after local officials approved tens of millions of dollars in tax breaks to keep the company in Lee County. 

Nearly every company that’s trying to deploy artificial intelligence runs into the same problem: it’s hard to integrate the tech into everyday operations. Industrial heavyweight Caterpillar has spent decades dealing with a version of that problem in the physical world, and now it’s using its experience to deploy AI.
