Ind. (WEHT) — If you walk into Old National Bank, you might see a new face in a new job and one that is much younger than you would normally expect. That’s thanks to Indiana`s first banking youth apprenticeship program
Students had to apply for the position. Then the school district helped prepare them for their interviews with real HR representatives with the Old National Bank. Seven were chosen in Evansville.
Only 50 students will be a part of the program across the state. The school district says the impact is being felt not just in their jobs but also in the classroom.
“One of the things we know in K-12 education is when we can make learning relevant,” B.J. Watts said. “We’re not telling you to do this because we told you to. You get to see how you’re going to use that every single day. And the students have talked to us about how all the things that they’re learning in their classrooms at North High School or anywhere across the EVSC, they kind of see, okay, this is why this is so important to me, because I’m going to use it every day in my job.”
EVSC Opt-In Executive Director B.J. Watts says the experience is already paying off. A student went into the program thinking she wanted to study accounting. Now after seeing what several finance roles look like she wants to get a degree in wealth management.
