Shopify announced on October 1 a new design environment called “Canvas” that allows merchants to design online stores through conversation with its AI agent “Sidekick.” All pages can be displayed side by side on a single screen, with chat-based instructions reflected in actual code in real time. The editing target is a rendering of live store code rather than a static preview, allowing users to check animations and switch between screen sizes. Sidekick performed over 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026 alone. The company simplified its theme structure so Sidekick can directly handle theme files. Canvas does not replace the existing editor, but it could lower barriers to entry for merchants who cannot afford to hire developers.
Key Elements
Canadian e-commerce platform giant Shopify announced on October 1 a new design environment called “Canvas” that allows merchants to design online stores through conversation with its AI agent “Sidekick.” The rollout to merchants will proceed gradually over the coming days. The goal is to enable merchants to build highly distinctive stores even without coding or design experience.
The core feature of Canvas is the ability to display all pages of a store side by side on a single screen. Merchants can survey the entire store while zooming in to refine details. In addition to the traditional method of clicking directly on elements to modify them, users can now issue instructions to Sidekickllowing users to see immediately how they appear within the context of the entire store
The editing target is not a static preview but a rendering of the actual code running the store. Users can check the display while switching between products and screen sizes, including animations and other dynamic elements. Sidekick responds with questions and suggestions during the process, allowing users to proceed with design while receiving feedback. It remembers preferences and past design decisions and carries them forward to subsequent work, eliminating the need to repeat the same instructions.
Shopify has previously offered no-code builders that allow users to rearrange modules and blocks within a selected theme. However, deeper customization required code editing or hiring developers. Canvas addresses this challenge by enabling Sidekick to directly handle theme files and simplifying the theme structure itself. Sidekick validates code and iterates on fixes while checking the results
According to the company, Sidekick performed more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026 alone. Product Director Ben Sehl reflected that when he launched the store for Kotn, the apparel brand he co-founded 12 years ago, it took him two weeks to build a roughly functional store even though he could write code. “Now you can build a fully custom store in 20 minutes that is far better than what we had back then,” he said. He also noted that “we’re still in the early stages, and Canvas does not replace the existing editor at this point.”
Design Director Austin Knight commented, “Getting Sidekick to write code was easy, but guiding it toward good design decisions required a lot of time and attention.”
Competition Intensifies Among AI Site-Building Tools
The launch of Canvas is part of a broader movement toward a future where website building does not directly require coding. In addition to existing site-building services such as Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, vibe-coding (conversational programming) platforms like Lovable and Replit offer similar capabilities, and competition is intensifying.
Shopify also announced on September 28 a feature expansion that allows AI agents to complete purchases at the checkout screen. The company continues to expand the scope of AI agent applications, from store building to purchasing.
Canvas is still in its early stages, and areas requiring expansion and improvement remain. However, for merchants without the budget to hire developers or designers, and for those without time to learn coding, it has the potential to lower barriers to entry into online sales. It is expected to become a viable option particularly for small and medium-sized merchants seeking highly distinctive stores without relying on existing templates.
