    the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Punjab remains one of the most vulnerable states to trans-border drug trafficking, accounting for 58 per cent of the total seizure of 3,567 kg of narcotics in 2025. The state of Rajasthan and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are also particularly vulnerable to trans-border drug trafficking allegedly coming from Pakistan.

As per the latest annual report for 2025 from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the India-Pakistan border, especially through Punjab, has witnessed a sharp surge and shift towards aerial (drone) smuggling in view of tight security checks on the ground.

The report highlights a disturbing trend, where smugglers and narco syndicates are using tech platforms and reasonably priced drones to transport consignments.

It mentions three important points of caution for India arising from opium cultivation in Afghanistan.

The report noted though cultivation has decreased due to the regime change in Afghanistan, the threat remains potent for India.

It notes that the decrease in volume is not correlated with the demand side, as existing stockpiles have sustained drug trafficking flows even as production has come down. Drug syndicates continue to remain active on the western corridor.

Rather than using traditional border crossings, they are now using drones to drop consignments.

Since the supply has come down due to strict control by the Afghan Taliban in Afghanistan, the syndicates are now diversifying, exploring new routes and supply chains to funnel drugs into India, the report noted.

The problem has surged in the northeastern region, where Mizoram accounted for the seizure of 1,477 kg of ATS.

This was 42 per cent of the total national seizure of 3,269 kg. Other significant contributors were Manipur (535 kg), Delhi (454 kg), Gujarat (308 kg) and Karnataka (164 kg). Cannabis remained the most frequently seized narcotic drug in 2025, the report said.
