NEW YORK (TNND) —President Donald Trump is set to address the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday as the war in Iran, rising oil prices and concerns over artificial intelligence cast a shadow over the annual gathering of world leaders.
Trump’s speech comes nearly seven months into the conflict with Iran, which he has said is necessary to address Tehran’s nuclear threat. The war has disrupted global energy markets and strained shipping routes in the Middle East, even as U.S. and Israeli strikes have killed much of Iran’s top leadership and damaged its air force and navy.
The president is expected to meet with leaders and senior officials from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to discuss the way forward in the war and recent Iran-backed attacks on Saudi Arabia. He is also scheduled to hold talks with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez, according to the White House.
The high-stakes meetings are unfolding as CNN, MS NOW and Politico challenge the administration’s decision to bar the outlets from the White House. The dispute has prompted major television networks to decline to replace CNN in the rotating TV pool.
Oil prices remain elevated despite a recent improvement in traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, where the U.S. Navy has helped guide commercial ships. Brent crude has hovered near $100 per barrel, up from roughly $70 before the war began, while threats to oil infrastructure and shipping lanes continue to unsettle markets.
Qatar, which has served as a mediator, said Monday it is trying to overcome a “deep deficit of trust” between Washington and Tehran and push both sides back toward negotiations.
“This will end at the negotiating table,” Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said. “Either we sign a deal now or sign a deal 10 months away. The only difference is the number of dead and destruction that we see.”
The visit will also feature a new agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would expand the U.S. military footprint on Greenland while keeping the Arctic territory under Danish control.
A meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy comes as efforts to broker an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine remain stalled. The address comes as his administration has reduced U.S. financial support for the organization and as he has repeatedly criticized the world body as ineffective. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Trump will make the case that his administration has confronted global challenges “head-on.”
