La. (WAFB) – After classes were canceled Tuesday, Sept. 8, Southern University announced its Baton Rouge campus will move to remote operations Wednesday, Sept. 9, as the campus continues to experience intermittent power outages following a transformer outage
University officials said the cancellation includes the laboratory school.
The university made the announcement saying employees for the campus and Southern Ag will work remotely.
Classes and operations for the Southern University Law Center will be conducted remotely.
In a notice initially sent Sunday evening, the university said internet and Wi-Fi service may also be temporarily interrupted.
Southern advised students, employees and visitors to use caution while moving throughout campus, particularly in areas where lighting, elevators, traffic signals or other electrical systems could be affected.
According to the Monday update from the school, generators were being installed for the residential facilities without power. They include the following halls:
- Bethune
- Grandison
- Reed
- White
Officials said students affected by the outage can go to the event center or the Horace W. Moody Intramural Center until generators are connected.
The university said crews were continuing to complete the necessary repairs and that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
As repairs continue following the power outage affecting the Southern University Baton Rouge landmass, the following operational changes will be in effect for Wednesday, Sept. 9.
Southern University Baton Rouge, the Southern University Law Center, the SU Ag Center and the Southern University Laboratory School will operate remotely.
All scheduled classes will be conducted virtually. Faculty and students should monitor Canvas for course information and official academic updates.
All employees will work remotely and should monitor their University email accounts for official updates, instructions from supervisors and other operational information.
Dunn Dining Hall will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mayberry Dining Hall will be open for lunch and dinner. The food court in the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union will be closed.
The notice comes less than a week after a campus-wide power outage closed Southern University Baton Rouge, the Southern University Law Center, the SU Ag Center and the Southern University Laboratory School on Sept. 1. University officials later said power had been restored across the landmass and that normal operations would resume the following day.
