Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will launch without two of the most contested features in modern game development. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, told Kinda Funny Games hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller that the game contains no real-money purchases and that generative AI played no part in building it.
The answers came out of a hands-on preview at the studio’s Edinburgh headquarters, the same visit that preceded the Netflix Extended Look. Cortez asked whether players would be able to spend real-world money in-game and reported back that there is no monetization. Miller followed up by asking point-blank about generative AI and was told there is no AI in the game.
The AI answer refers to generative tools rather than the traditional systems that have driven traffic, pedestrians, and police behavior in the series for years. It also matches what Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick said in February, when he told GamesIndustry that generative AI has no part in what Rockstar is building and that its worlds are constructed street by street rather than generated.
The New York Times, in a feature published around the same preview week, reported that GTA 6 contains well over 600,000 animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and around 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2.
The confirmation applies to the single-player game launching on 19 November for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and Rockstar refused to say anything about the next iteration of GTA Online when Kinda Funny raised it. GTA Online has sold Shark Cards as real-money currency packs for more than a decade, and that is where the series’ monetization has always lived.
GTA 6 also features a tiered pricing structure, with the standard edition costing $80 and the $100 Ultimate Edition bundling extra in-game content as a pre-order bonus. That is a different mechanism from a live storefront sitting in the pause menu, but buyers paying more for extra content is still buyers paying more for extra content.
Sensor Tower estimates pre-orders rose 436% on 27 August, the day the Netflix Extended Look aired, compared with the previous day, and 572% across 27 and 28 August measured against the prior 30-day average. The split between platforms was stark, with PlayStation sales up 606% against a 127% rise for Xbox, and the firm had already logged 4.55 million pre-orders before the special aired.
