The stock chart told one story on Friday: a 12 percent slide that left shares at €30.80. The earnings release told another — one of a company that has quietly crossed a threshold its investors may not have fully registered.
IREN’s fiscal 2026 results, published Thursday, showed a net loss of $702.6 million, a jarring reversal from the $86.9 million profit posted a year earlier. Revenue climbed 41.1 percent to $707 million, yet adjusted EBITDA slipped 8.9 percent to $245.7 million. On the surface, it reads as deterioration. Beneath it sits a strategic transition that is already complete in one crucial respect: for the first time, revenue from AI cloud services, at $70.5 million, surpassed the $66.7 million generated by Bitcoin mining.
The swing from profit to loss is largely a bookkeeping artifact. The company took a $639 million impairment on mining hardware it plans to retire by the end of December — a non-cash charge that, while painful on paper, marks the symbolic end of IREN’s identity as a Bitcoin miner. The fourth quarter alone carried $450.4 million in non-cash impairments on decommissioned mining rigs, plus a further $102.1 million write-down on hardware held for sale.
What investors are actually buying now is a bet on AI infrastructure, not cryptocurrency prices. That repositioning carries a hefty price tag. Management has guided to capital expenditures of $25 billion to $30 billion for the current fiscal year, earmarked for liquid-cooled data center construction.
The market’s skepticism is visible in the share price’s recent trajectory. Since IREN delivered its first data center, “Horizon 1,” to Microsoft at the start of the month and achieved Nvidia’s Exemplar Cloud status for GB300-NVL72 systems, the stock has shed roughly 11.5 percent. The completion of the $625 million Mirantis acquisition — aimed at bringing cloud software and workload management in-house — has knocked nearly another 10 percent off the share price. Each growth initiative is being interpreted as a cost risk rather than an opportunity.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying IREN?
That pattern raises a fair question: is this an overreaction, or are investors genuinely beginning to doubt whether IREN can finance its transformation? The balance sheet offers some reassurance. The company held $7.6 billion in cash and equivalents at quarter-end, including $1.7 billion in restricted funds tied to customer prepayments.
On Thursday, IREN secured an additional $2.4 billion financing package led by Blue Owl Capital, split evenly between a secured term loan and secured notes of $1.2 billion each, carrying a 9 percent interest rate. Pimco participated as well — a signal that institutional lenders retain confidence in the growth plan, even at a cost that is hardly cheap. Proceeds are designated for Nvidia Blackwell Ultra GPUs destined for the Mackenzie campus in British Columbia.
The bull case rests on a $4 billion backlog of annualized contracted revenue that IREN aims to lock in by year-end, roughly $1 billion of which is already operational. Management itself cautions that this metric shouldn’t be equated with reported GAAP revenue. H.C. Wainwright recommended Thursday that investors treat the sell-off as a buying opportunity, describing the earnings call as “fundamentally constructive.”
Yet analyst opinion is unusually fractured. Mike Colonnese at H.C. Wainwright reaffirmed a Buy rating with a $90 price target on Friday. J.P. Morgan’s Richard Choe, by contrast, reiterated an Underweight recommendation on Wednesday with a price target of just $46. Between those poles sit additional Buy ratings with targets ranging from $79 to $100.
The stock trades roughly 14 percent below its 50-day moving average, with an annualized volatility of 125 percent and an RSI of 40.2 — well beneath its 50, 100, and 200-day averages. For all the recent pain, the shares remain up 56 percent over twelve months.
The Microsoft relationship extends beyond the initial delivery. On August 13, the company confirmed acceptance of the first of four planned 50-megawatt liquid-cooling clusters at the Childress campus in Texas. “Horizon 2” is expected to follow shortly, with “Horizon 3” and “4” slated for the fourth calendar quarter of 2026. The Mirantis deal, alongside the earlier Nostrum acquisition, is designed to round out IREN’s cloud offering into a complete software stack.
What separates the bulls from the bears is whether $25 to $30 billion of planned investment represents a rational build-out of contracted AI capacity or a leveraged gamble on a market that may not materialize as quickly as hoped. The 9 percent coupon on the new debt suggests lenders are pricing in meaningful risk. The $4 billion backlog suggests customers are voting with contracts. Both can be true simultaneously — which is precisely why the stock is swinging as violently as it is.
