LG Uplus has become the first South Korean mobile carrier to launch a global bug bounty program in partnership with HackerOne, the world’s largest bug bounty platform, effective from the 24th. A bug bounty is a program in which companies or organizations pay rewards to white-hat hackers who discover security vulnerabilities in their services and IT infrastructure. LG Uplus has jointly operated a bug bounty program with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) since October 2024. Valid vulnerabilities reported by South Korean white-hat hackers have been promptly identified and addressed through LG Uplus’s internal vulnerability management system and KISA’s cyber security vulnerability information portal.
HackerOne, the new partner, is the world’s largest bug bounty platform with approximately 2.4 million white-hat hackers participating globally. The platform has demonstrated high-caliber vulnerability detection capabilities and responsiveness across diverse security scenarios through long-standing partnerships with the U.S. Department of Defense and numerous global big tech companies.
The program will operate on a private basis, with participation limited to experienced global white-hat hackers who have passed identity verification and capability assessment procedures. The process involves receiving reports from global white-hat hackers on an ongoing basis to detect threats and rapidly analyze and remediate vulnerabilities, enabling LG Uplus to proactively respond to potential security risks.
With the recent advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), security threats such as expanded attack surfaces are no longer confined to South Korea but are occurring across borders. As telecommunications services increasingly interface with overseas infrastructure—including roaming, cloud, and AI services—LG Uplus determined that the need to proactively manage security risks arising from the expansion of overseas services and infrastructure has grown significantly.
Hong Gwan-hee, head of LG Uplus’s Information Security Center (Chief Information Security Officer), emphasized: “The goal of this partnership is to proactively identify and address vulnerabilities we may have missed, given that telecommunications services are increasingly interfacing with overseas infrastructure. We will take the lead in fostering a safe and transparent security ecosystem and spreading a culture of responsible vulnerability management.”
Through this global bug bounty operation, LG Uplus expects to uncover potential vulnerabilities that are difficult to detect using South Korea’s domestic security verification framework alone. In particular, by leveraging HackerOne’s global white-hat hacker community, the company can receive ongoing reports on security issues that are hard to identify domestically, enabling faster response to security threats that may arise at the points where telecommunications services connect with overseas infrastructure.
