‘It’s 9pm’: Concerned mum blasted online after calling out parents’ bizarre late-night shopping act
A mum has taken to social media to reveal the backlash she received after sharing her “unpopular opinion” about parents who take their kids late-night shopping.
A mum has come under fire online after sharing her “unpopular opinion” that a person who takes their child shopping late at night is “not being a great parent”.
Taking to Instagram, the mother of two shared a video of herself eating noodles in a loud mall food court during the late-night shopping hours.
“I’m a parent myself so maybe I’m going to get absolutely slaughtered for this…” she wrote in the caption of the post, adding: “But I’m in a shopping centre at 9pm and there are little kids everywhere absolutely losing their minds.”
She went on to say that she was shocked that kids were “screaming, crying, clearly exhausted” while their parents carried on shopping.
“And I’m sorry but… take them home?”
“I KNOW parenting is hard. I know sometimes you have to drag your kids somewhere when they’re tired. I’ve done it. But there’s something about watching a tiny child completely dysregulated because they’re exhausted, and then watching the adult get annoyed at the CHILD for it, that makes me cringe.”
The mum pointed out that those children aren’t giving their parents a hard time, “they’re having a hard time”.
“It’s 9pm. They’ve probably been awake all day. There are bright lights, music, people everywhere and they’re completely done,” she added.
“Sometimes I think we expect children to tolerate adult schedules and adult environments, then punish them when they physically can’t.”
She went on to say that she knows she doesn’t get parenting right all the time, adding that her kids “have had public meltdowns” too, but when children are “that far gone”, she says the parent should take them home.
Social media users poured into the comments section, with many quick to criticise the mum’s perspective and accuse her of being judgemental.

“Aw this is so sad to judge someone based off this. Maybe it was an emergency to pick something up for a sick child and they have no other childcare? Maybe it’s spending time with family as a special treat as they have something difficult going on in their lives? Let’s not tear other parents down without knowing the full story,” one person wrote.
Another added: “Sometimes there’s last-minute things that you need to get, like a present for a party you forgot or something for lunch tomorrow or something for a school project, yes its not ideal but it happens, eat your dinner in peace and maybe give happy vibes to the poor mum having to bring her kids out at that time.”
“I think the only kids’ bedtime you need to be worried about are your own. You have no idea what those families’ schedules are like. Not everyone has the opportunity to go out by themselves like you are,” a third added.
A fourth penned: “A ‘single parent’ telling parents what to do and what not to do.”
However, a few commenters were in the mum’s corner, with one person writing: “Completely agree, when I see toddlers on buses or train stations in London and it’s 10/11pm I genuinely worry about those children.”
Another chimed in: “100% agree. She is clearly not talking about a single parent darting into the store quickly for groceries or medicine. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been to Target after 8pm and seen people casually shopping through the aisles with a wailing overtired toddler, like take your kid home to bed.”
